KINGSTON, Ont. (Aug. 23, 2025) - Queen's Football opened the season with an incredible back-and-forth matchup against the rival Western Mustangs, ultimately dropping the Week 1 tilt 45-42 in the fourth overtime Saturday at Richardson Stadium.
After the Mustangs jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first quarter, Queen's Football came storming back, scoring the next 26 points to hold a 16-point lead early in the fourth quarter.
Russell Weir (Economics) recorded two scores, one receiving and one rushing, and
Alex Vreeken (Kinesiology) added another to
Mateo Tuioti (Arts & Science) as Queen's built the two-score lead.
Western made a late comeback, scoring two straight touchdowns and successfully connecting on the two-point conversions to even the score, and even took a late lead on a field goal with just 31 seconds left.
Queen's marched down the field and
Tyler Mullan (Arts & Science) connected on the second of four field goals on the game to send it to overtime.
Queen's and Western would match field goals on their first two possessions in overtime and touchdowns on their third possession, with Queen's finding the end zone on an incredible Vreeken run.
Western would ultimately hit a third overtime field goal in the fourth session to grab the three-point win.
Queen's Football returns to action next weekend, taking on the McMaster Marauders on the road, Saturday, Aug. 30 at 1 p.m. in Hamilton, Ont.
