Queen's Football completed an undefeated season with a 30-12 win over the Ottawa Gee-Gees Thursday night in Ottawa, Ont.
With the win, the Gaels finish the regular season with a 6-0 record and first in the OUA East.
Running back
Rasheed Tucker (Ajax, Ont.) had another commanding performance for Queen's, pacing the offence with 24 carries for 106 yards and a season-high three touchdowns.
Tucker added to his OUA-leading rushing yards and will finish the season with14 carries for 700 yards and eight touchdowns.
"Important win for our team to go on the road on a short week with Ottawa having the bye week leading up to this game," said
Steve Snyder, Head Coach, Football. "That was a big win for us to go on the road and finish the regular season off the right way. I thought it was a gutsy win where our team had to really push through and stick together and stay positive. I thought they did some really good things there."Â
The game was close through two and a half quarters, with the Gaels leading Ottawa by just one point, 13-12, when Queen's defence and Tucker took over. Queen's defence forced two turnovers – an interception by
Ashton Miller-Melancon and a fumble recovery – and Tucker found the end zone for his second and third touchdowns as Queen's scored 17 unanswered points on their way to the 18-point win.
For Miller-Melancon (Montreal, Que.), it was his OUA-leading third interception of the season.
Josh McBain (Mississauga, Ont.) had a big game on defence as well, finishing with a team-high 6.5 tackles while
Nolan Bedard (Montreal, Que.) finished the game with 5.5 tackles and a forced fumble.
On offence, quarterback
James Keenan (Ottawa, Ont.) played well, finishing with 13-26 for 183 yards.
Sebastian Hansen (Victoria, B.C.) was Queen's leading receiver with three receptions for 50 yards while
Sakhia Kwemo (Montreal, Que.) added four receptions for 43 yards.
Kicker
Nick Liberatore (Dartmouth, N.S.) finished with three field goals on the game.
"It's been a journey this year," said Snyder. "I thought our team has done a really good job of literally just taking it one day at a time. That's been the key for us – having that reset mentality and applying it anywhere and everywhere we can. It's been really positive that way with our guys."
Queen's Football has a bye week next week and will await their opponent in the first round of the OUA Playoffs, which will take place Saturday, Nov. 6 at Richardson Stadium.
