Queen's Football's defence had another commanding performance and quarterback
James Keenan threw two highlight reel touchdown passes as the Gaels shut out the Carleton Ravens for a 45-0 win Saturday at Richardson Stadium.
With the win, Queen's second over Carleton this season, the Gaels improved their record to 5-0 and clinched the OUA East title. Carleton's record falls to 2-3 with the loss.
After Queen's and Carleton played to a scoreless first quarter, the Gaels, led by their defence, racked up 27 points in the second quarter and never looked back on their way to the big win.
Ashton Miller-Melancon (Montreal, Que.) recorded two interceptions while
Thompson McCallum (Mississauga, Ont.),
Nolan Bedard (Montreal, Que.), and
Wells Karabin (King City, Ont.) all added one and the Gaels' defence forced four Carleton safeties in the win.
Queen's defence also forced a turnover on downs in the third quarter and the special teams unit recovered a fumble on a Carleton kick return.
"I thought they played really hard, played really smart football as well. Obviously our defence played really well pitching a shutout," said
Steve Snyder, Head Coach, Football.
"We're playing smart defence right now. We're attacking. We have some personnel in some great spots and obviously the secondary coming up with a number of interceptions and I thought our line of scrimmage guys did a really good job."
Keenan (Ottawa, Ont.) had a strong game on offence, finishing 16-26 for 251 yards with touchdown passes to
Sakhia Kwemo (Montreal, Que.) and
Sebastian Hansen (Victoria, BC).
Hansen was Queen's leading receiver, finishing the game with three receptions for 93 yards and the score.
Rasheed Tucker (Ajax, Ont.) finished the game with 17 carries for 74 yards and a touchdown.
Running back
Anthony Soles (Point Claire, Que.) ran for a touchdown in the fourth quarter and kicker
Nick Liberatore (Dartmouth, NS) added three field goals in the win.
Queen's has a short turnaround and will face the Ottawa Gee-Gees in their final regular season game of the season Thursday in Ottawa.
