Football Preview: Gaels host York Lions on Union Kitchen and Cocktails Homecoming Think Pink/Senior Day

The Queen's Gaels football team (2-5) will close out the regular season against the York Lions (1-6) on Saturday afternoon at the Union Kitchen and Cocktails Homecoming Think Pink/Senior Day. 

UNION KITCHEN AND COCKTAILS HOMECOMING THINK PINK/SENIOR DAY

The event will also be themed Think Pink, as our varsity athletes continued their annual tradition of participating in the Kingston Run for the Cure, in support of the Cancer Society and Breast Cancer Research projects, this year the Gaels raised close to $30,000 dollars. The Tricolour Guard halftime parade will recognize graduating classes of 50 years and beyond, including the 1949, 54, 64, 69, classes. Breast Cancer Kingston is raffling off a 2019 Ford Escape with the proceeds going to local breast cancer patients and survivors. 50/50 tickets will be sold with proceeds going to Junior Gaels Hockey. There will also also be face painting, activities, and kids under 12 are free.

YORK PREVIEW 

The Lions are coming off their first victory of the season defeating the University of Toronto Varsity Blues 34-14. York held Varsity Blues quarterback Clay Sequeira to just 16 for 38 passes for 151 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Lions Brett Hunchak returned from injury and outdueled Sequeira completing 18 of 29 passes for 271 yards for one touchdown and one interception. Lions defensive back Jacob Janke intercepted a Sequeira pass and returned the ball 47 yards for a touchdown to give the Lions a 24-7 lead early in the third quarter. After York took a commanding 34-7 late in the fourth quarter, Toronto scored a touchdown at the end of regulation for a 34-14 final score. 

SNYDER ON YORK 

"They've got an outstanding quarterback, who's missed sometime this year and its really hurt them, he's been a really good football player who's been really productive in our league. I wasn't surprised by their victory over Toronto because you see York's athleticism, explosive ability and their ability to go out and play good football," said head coach Steve Snyder

KEY PLAYERS TO WATCH 

RB - Rasheed Tucker - Queen's 

Tucker has been on a tear this season averaging 106.8 yards per game, the third best mark in OUA this season. Even despite missing two games due to injury, Tucker sits fifth in the conference with 

DL - Tyler Roy - Queen's 

The Gaels defensive lineman had the best game of his career with 4.5 sacks on Friday, just one less than the Queen's record. Roy will look to put constant pressure on Hunchak, who's thrown five interceptions in five games this season. 

QB - Brent Hunchak - York 

The Lions quarterback ranks eighth in the league with 235.0 yards per game. He led the Lions to their first win of the season last weekend over Toronto. 

DL - Kevin Musai - York

Musai has accumulated four sacks in just five games for the Gaels. He's been a bright spot on a York defense that has allowed 35.6 ppg, the third-most in the conference this season.  


2018 MATCHUP

The Gaels handily defeated York 42-21 las August in the most recent matchup between the two teams. 

Nate Hobbs completed 19 of 32 passes for 320 yards an three touchdown, as well as one rushing touchdown. Wide receiver Chris Osei-Kusi led the way with six catches for 108 yards and fellow receiver Matteo Del Brocco made three receptions for 82 yards and one touchdown. 

The Gaels led just 17-12 at halftime before scoring 25 second-half points to York's nine. 

Queen's had five unanswered scoring plays before Brett Hunchak completed a six yard touchdown pass with nine seconds left to seal the final score at 42-21 in favour of Queen's.
