GAELS THIS WEEK – Men’s and women’s soccer host Laurentian Saturday in Game of the Week

Gaels This Week
GAMES OF THE WEEK

The Gaels men's and women's soccer teams host Laurentian on Saturday at 12 and 2:15 pm in the games of the week. Both can be seen live at OUA.tv.

Women's Soccer
The No. 5 Gaels women's soccer team had a BYE week during Week 1 of the OUA regular season, but used the time to get ready with a pair of non-conference exhibition matches against the visiting UQTR Patriotes and Acadia Axewomen. Both matches ended in a 1-1 draw on Gaels turf at Richardson Stadium.

Saturday sees the Gaels (0-0-0) looking to kick off their OUA regular season with a home victory as they host the visiting Laurentian Voyageurs (0-1-0) at Richardson Stadium with a 12 pm start time. The Voyageurs suffered a 1-0 loss to Ryerson last weekend.

The Gaels met Laurentian twice last season – both matches saw 2-0 victories for the Gaels at home and on the road during regular conference action. Last year the Voyageurs finished with a 9-6-1 record compared to an 11-4-1 standing for Queen's.

Queen's will host back-to-back games this weekend, as the Gaels host the Nipissing Lakers at 12 pm on Sunday at Richardson Stadium. The game Saturday can be seen live at OUA.tv.

Men's Soccer
The Queen's men's soccer team will continue their regular season, returning to Kingston for their home opener at Richardson Stadium this Saturday at 2:15 pm against the Laurentian Voyageurs following a 1-0 defeat on the road at UOIT last Sunday.

Queen's and Laurentian enter play at 0-1-0, with a road loss each during their season openers. Laurentian fell 3-0 to the Toronto Varsity Blues last weekend.

Last year the Voyageurs finished with a 6-8-2 record compared to a 7-5-4 standing for Queen's. During that same season, Queen's drew Laurentian in the OUA playoffs and came out on top with a 1-0 victory over the Voyageurs.

The men's soccer team will also host back-to-back games this weekend with a Sunday match at 2:15 pm against the Nipissing Lakers at Richardson Stadium following the women's game. The game Saturday against Laurentian can be seen live at OUA.tv.

Women's Rugby
The Gaels women's rugby team will begin their OUA regular season on the road at Guelph on Saturday before returning to Kingston for their home opener at Nixon Field on September 9 against Western.

The Gaels have been busy with their preseason preparation this past week, hosting both the Ottawa Gee-Gees and the Carleton Ravens. The Gaels fell 10-5 to the Gee-Gees, but bounced back against the Ravens a couple days later in a 25-5 victory.

This Saturday the Gaels will be looking for not only a road win, but for redemption against Guelph. The last time these two teams met was during the OUA semifinals, when the Gaels fell 37-0 to the Gryphons in Guelph. The last win for Queen's at Guelph was in 2013 at the OUA championship where the Gaels claimed their first program banner with a 19-15 victory.

Men's Rugby
The Queen's men's rugby team will kick off regular season action looking for a road victory in their season opener against the Trent Excalibur on Monday in Peterborough at 1pm. Expectations are high for the Gaels men's rugby team, who have won four OUA Championships in the last five seasons.

The Gaels will have redemption on their minds all season after having lost out on the OUA title last season in a match at Guelph that went into penalty kicks.

Last year Queen's defeated Trent 44-17 – a season that saw the Gaels finish with a 6-1-1 record versus the Excalibur's 4-4 record.

Check back next week for a full season preview of men's rugby.
