Queen’s Women’s Sabre Win Gold & Men’s Sabre Wins Bronze at the 2025 Carleton Team Invitational

OTTAWA, Ont. (Jan. 11-12, 2025) - Queen's Sabre had a stellar start to 2025, with the Queen's Fencing Team capturing Gold in the Women's event and Bronze in the Men's competition at the Carleton Team Invitational.

Day 1: Men's Sabre & Foil + Women's Epee

On the first day of competition, Queen's Men's Sabre A team (Alexandre Prefontaine (Applied Science), Luigi Burjato (Applied Science), Luke Steverango (Graduate Studies), & Justin Bhatla (Medicine)) narrowly missed out on the gold medal match, losing in the semi-finals 42-45 against Toronto's Tim's Fencing Academy, but rallied for a decisive 45-22 victory against the team from Masque de Fer (Gatineau).

The Men's Foil A team (Sam Broughton (Medicine), Cameron Hostetler Keates (Arts & Science), Ewan Peterson (Computing), Pendleton Murray (Arts & Science)) fought hard throughout the day, finishing 5th overall after a tough 43-45 loss to Tim's Fencing Academy that left them just short of the medal contention.
The Queen's Women's Epee teams also had good showings, finishing the day in 9th and 10th place, while the Men's Sabre and Foil B Teams appeared in the Top 16, finishing 14th and 15th, respectively.

Day 2: Women's Sabre + Men's Epee

On Sunday, the Queen's Women's Sabre A Team, consisting of Tia Gayowsky (Medicine), Florella Peng (Health Sciences), Quintyn Zuber (Health Sciences) & Emma Gardner (Education), went undefeated during the competition winning the Gold Medal. After topping their poule by defeating Carleton and Western, they excelled in the Direct Elimination rounds, overcoming RMC, McMaster and ultimately defeating the Ottawa Fencing Club 45-36 in the final.

The Women's Foil A Team (Nancy Chua (Arts & Science), Sarah Jacobson (Applied Science), Sophie Kitson (Arts & Science) with Lillian Liu (Health Sciences) came 8th overall after edging out a strong Ottawa team 43-41 in the Round of 16 before falling to Laval's Montmorency Fencing Club in the Round of 8.

The Queen's Men's Epee teams made it through the cuts and into the Direct Elimination rounds, with the A team finishing 11th overall as did the Women's Sabre B Team. QFC's Foil C and B teams also had Top 16 finishes, ending the day in 12th and 16th place.

The Queen's Fencing Team next competes in the Women's OUA Championship, hosted by Queen's University on February 8-9, 2025.
