Queen's Squash got off to a strong start to their competitive season at the Jesters Sectional 1, while Queen's Water Polo split their matches in Ottawa.
Queen's Squash
Queen's Men's Squash travelled to McGill University this past weekend to compete in their first tournament of the season, the Jesters Sectional 1. The men faced off against Ottawa University in the first round and won with a convincing 6-1 scoreline. Four new faces - Sayeed Mavani, Zachary Gill, Basit Abdul, and Adam Williams - made their Queen's Squash debut and helped us secure the first win of the season.Â
Â
The second match up was against the home team of McGill University. The clash between two talented teams was epic and ended with the Gaels squeaking out the win 4-3! Queen's veterans Felix Scholberg and Salah Elsherif helped secure 2 much needed wins against McGill, with Scholberg coming back from 0-2 down to win his game 3-2 in a most impressive display of mental/physical toughness and fortitude.Â
Â
The Men's team starts off the season with an undefeated record of 2-0 and will look to keep up the momentum going into the next tournament coming November 2.Â
Â
Thanks to McGill for hosting a great and competitive day of squash!

Queen's Women's Squash also travelled to McGill to compete in their first tournament of the season, the Jesters Sectional 1, on Saturday. The women first faced University of Ottawa and finished with a solid 7-0 win. Captain Gabby Waite had the tightest match against Ottawa's veteran talent, Megha Bhatia. Gabby was down 2 games, then took the third 12-10, before winning the final two games to squeak out the win.
The second match up was against the home team, McGill. The Gaels fell 5-2 against McGill's talented squad. Queen's rookie, Maggie Davis, had a fantastic day with two solid dialled-in wins of 3-love each. Special recognition also goes to Maya Lakhani who pushed through to win in 5 against McGill's veteran, Isabelle Lavallee-Gordon.
Thank you to McGill for hosting a great and competitive day of squash.
Queen's Water Polo
Â
Queen's Men's and Women's Water Polo travelled to Ottawa on Sunday for NCWP matches against the Carleton Ravens (Women) and Ottawa Gee Gees (Men).
Queen's Women's Water Polo comfortably won their match 12-6. This helped remove the disappointment of a loss to the Gee Gees last week in Toronto. Leading the women once again was Captain Ally Rowe with 5 goals. Also contributing to the offence were Ry Hay with 3, Julia Kolosov and Kat Snelling with 2 each.
Queen's Men's Water Polo got off to a slow start when facing Ottawa and saw the first quarter deficit of 6-1 too much to overcome. Final result was Carleton 15-9.
Scoring was well shared with 2 goals each to Jake Kost, George Huang, Kristijan Markovski and Lazar Paroski. Matt LeRoux had the single. Next up for the men will be an alumni match following the fall break.
Queen's Women's Lacrosse
Queen's Women's Lacrosse defeated the Ottawa Gee-Gees and Toronto Varsity Blues over the weekend. In their 18-2 win over the Gee-Gees, the Gaels started strong with two goals in a row from Tara Meikle, one from Kenna McKee, and one from Brooke Rutledge to finish the first quarter 4-1. Queen's continued to grow that lead in the 2nd with five more goals, closing out the first half 9-1. The Gaels'Â offence went on to score another nine goals in the second half, (including goals for Kennedy Coghlin, Ruby Charney, and Piper Scott). Queen's defence let in just one goal in the final three quarters. Top scorers included Tara Meikle (3G, 3A), Brooke Rutledge (3G), and Summer Thomas (4A).
In their 16-4 win over the Varsity Blues, Queen's started with a close first quarter, with the Gaels up 3-2 after two goals in a row from Jaedyn Smail and one for Victoria Murray. Queen's gained momentum in the 2nd, going on to score five more goals to finish the half up 8-3. Another goal each from Murray & Smail, two from Meikle and 1G 1A for Charlotte Sawicki. Queen's Field Hockey
This past weekend, Queen's Field Hockey played against the Toronto Varsity Blues on both Saturday and Sunday.Â
On Saturday, the Gaels played at home and came out strong scoring in the first two minutes with the goal being scored by rookie Kate Martin, with an assist from Captain Monica Johnston. Queen's persevered through injuries that took place in the first quarter and rookie goalie Sarah Downes stepped in late in the first quarter, making her first OUA appearance. The score was 3-1 at half, the Gaels played a strong second half where no goals were scored.
On Sunday, Queen's travelled to Toronto, hoping to change the score from the day before. It was a long, hard-fought game and the Gaels showed grit and determination. Goalie Sarah Downes showed great composure in the net. Unfortunately, Queen's fell short and lost 2-0.Â
Queen's field hockey is looking forward to playing a double-header against the McGill Martlets in Montreal on Saturday October 12th.Â
