Varsity Clubs Weekend Recap: Queen’s Squash sweeps first Crossover Tournament of season

Queen's Men's and Women's Squash swept their first Crossover Tournament of the season, Queen's Fencing finished fourth overall at the RMC Invitational, and Queen's Water Polo hosted a NCWP tournament at the ARC pool over the weekend.

Men's Squash

The Queen's Men's and Women's Squash Teams eagerly traveled to the prestigious Mayfair Lakeshore Club in Toronto this last weekend to compete in their first crossover tournament of the season. Both teams were looking to improve their already strong records on the season and were firing to go.

The Queen's Men's team started off the weekend with their toughest matchup against the strong, adversarial Waterloo. From the very first game the tone was set by Queen's own Salah Elsherif, who battled through a 5 game thriller where he pushed through in the end winning the final game 11-8, keeping the entire audience on the edge of their seats. It only got more intense from there as Felix Scholberg and Justin Weller also delved into the trenches of battling to 5 games, giving it everything they had. At the end of the day though, the Queen's Men showed their gritt and took the match 6-1!! The entire match took over 3 hours to complete and was a showdown for the books.

The Queen's Men jumped right back into action following the Queen's Women against McMaster University. With a solid performance, the Men swept McMaster 7-0 thanks to Akasham Rajagopaul's and Sayeed Mavani's stellar leadership.

The weekend tournament ended with the Queen's Men at it again against the Brock Men on Sunday morning. Logan Elder and Zachary Gill showed their consistency throughout the week with 3-0 performances to give the Queen's Men a solid victory against Brock with a final match score of 6-1!

Women's Squash

This weekend the Women's Squash team travelled to Toronto to compete against the Brock Badgers and Guelph Gryphons in the first Jester's Crossover of the season. The girls brought strong spirits into the weekend and it showed with 2 dominant wins.

In the first matchup against Brock, the girls prevailed with a 7-0 win and strong showings across the board. Special congratulations to Gabriella Menezes on her first tournament and win as a Gael! Coaching in between games was a big part of the weekend for the girls and Lianne Ouellette played a big role in helping the girls recover between games and get set for the next. Another shout out to the boast return queen Ava Galloway for not giving up and never letting her opponent hit a quick shot, nothing gets past Ava.

The team held strong during the second match vs Guelph with a 6-1 win.  The lineup was very even and each of the girls brought their A-game to secure many 3-0 wins. Everyone maintained their position on court and controlled many of the matches. Cheers from the Men's and Women's teams kept the spirits high and the motivation to win even stronger. Teamwork and leadership shown by the girls this weekend did not go unnoticed and was key for success. Amazing job Girls!

Congratulations as well to the Men's team on their 3 wins this weekend to make it a clean 5-0 sweep for Queen's Squash. The girls are back on the road in 2 weeks travelling to London for the second sectional of the season to face Western and University of Toronto!

Water Polo

Caiomyn Fitzgerald

The men's and women's water polo teams hosted every National Collegiate Water Polo (NCWP) team at ARC on the weekend at a regional cross-over event. Both teams trying to solidify seasonal rankings heading into our late November championships, also hosted at our home pool.

The women took steps to hold a top 3 position and split the weekend 2-2, having an 11-5 win over McGill on Saturday and nail bitter 10-9 win over Ottawa Gee Gees Sunday. Other games were losses of 19-4 to UofT and 10-13 to McMaster. The team wins their seasonal series with Gee Gees (2w/1L) and McGill (1w), splits the season with Mac (1w/1L) and ends up with a single loss to UofT.

Leading the team again this weekend was captain Ally Rowe with 11 goals, including an incredible 6 against McGill Saturday night. Other scorers were Ry Kay with 7, Sophia Herrington 6, Julia Kolosov and Jessie Turcott 4 each.

The men struggled with big roster losses to illness and injury, missing half the starting line all weekend. That shortened bench really made some close matches and 2 games were decided by a single goal. A Saturday 15-16 loss to McGill was offset by an 11-10 win over Ottawa Gee Gees Sunday.  Their other weekend match was a 2-22 loss to UofT on Sunday morning.

Leading the men in scoring were Caiomyn Fitzgerald with 8 goals, 5 of which were against Ottawa at the end of the Sunday schedule. Stefan Groza with 7, Kristijan Markovski 6 and Matt LeRoux 4 were the other leaders.

Men will not know the season ranking until mid November but have won enough to be in the medal hunt when they host the finals at the end of the month.
