Logan Walton connected for some late-game heroics as Queen's Football defeated the Windsor Lancers 22-19 in the first round of the OUA Playoffs Saturday in Windsor, Ont.
Trailing 19-14 with less than a minute to play, Weir (Economics) found Walton (Economics) for a 39-yard score to give Queen's Football a one-point lead with just five seconds to play. Queen's added a two-point conversion for a three-point lead and held on to defeat the Lancers and advance to the OUA semifinals.
Queen's will be on the road again next weekend, taking on the No. 1 seed Laurier Golden Hawks on Saturday, Nov. 2 in Waterloo, Ont.
It was a tight contest throughout, with Queen's taking an early lead off a single point and safety. The Lancers scored the first major of the game late in the first quarter and added a field goal early in the second for a 10-3 lead.
Tyler Mullan (Arts & Science) connected on field goals of 34 and 18 yards, sandwiching another Lancers field goal, and Queen's trailed 13-9 at half time.
Mullan added a third field goal, this one a 21-yarder in the third quarter, while Windsor added two more in the third to take a 19-12 lead into the fourth quarter.
Queen's would force a late safety to pull within five points before the late game heroics on offence.
Anthony Lio (Kinesiology) finished the game 16-25 for 152 yards before Weir took over after Lio left with an apparent injury, going 5-8 for 93 yards and a touchdown.
Jared Chisari (Graduate Studies) finished the game with 12 carries for 58 yards.
Walton's 39-yard touchdown reception added to his totals of three catches for 65 yards, while
Nathan Falconi (Health Studies) also had 65 yards on six receptions, and
Mateo Tuioti (Arts & Science) recorded six receptions for 54 yards.
Josh McBain (Economics) had a huge game on defence for Queen's recording a team-high nine tackles (seven solo, four assisted) and one sack.
Darien Newell (Philosophy) finished with 1.5 sacks, 2.5 tackles for a loss, and one forced fumble.
