Queen's Football fell just short in their OUA Playoffs semifinals matchup against the Laurier Golden Hawks, losing a close road contest 29-21 Saturday afternoon in Waterloo, Ont.
Queen's started the game strong, leading for most of the first half off a 14-yard field goal by
Tyler Mullan (Arts & Science) and three-yard touchdown reception by
Nico Kwemo (Kinesiology), while Queen's defence held the Golden Hawks to just a field goal, while also forcing a safety until late in the first half.
Laurier scored three touchdowns and forced a safety late in the second quarter to take a 26-12 lead into half time.
The teams would trade field goals early in the second half, with Mullan connecting on a 37-yarder before adding two more as Queen's made a late push – including an incredible 49-yarder – to pull within a score. But Laurier held on late for the eight-point win.
Matt Camillo (Economics) had a strong game on offence for Queen's, finishing with seven receptions for 100 yards, while Kwemo added eight receptions for 69 yards and a touchdown.
Anthony Lio (Kinesiology) was solid, finishing the game 26-43 for 293 yards and a touchdown.
Justin Pace (Economics) continued a very strong season on the defensive side of the ball, finishing with a game-high 12.5 tackles (11 solo, three assisted).
Van Wishart (Arts & Science) added a sack for Queen's in the loss.
Laurier will advance to the Yates Cup, where they will host the Western Mustangs, while Queen's season ends in the semifinals.
