KINGSTON, Ont. (July 4, 2023) – Four members of Queen's Rowing will represent Team Canada at the 2023 World Rowing U23 Championships later this month, Rowing Canada announced last week.
Bob Bryden,
Lucas Celia,
Claire Ellison, and
Andrew Hubbard are among the 29 rowers that will travel Plovdiv, Bulgaria for the Championships.
Bryden (Calgary Alta.) will compete in the Men's Pair (BM2-) event alongside Michael Keane. Bryden captured two gold medals at the OUA Championship and one silver medal at the Canadian University Rowing Championship (CURC) with Queen's last season.
Celia (Grimsby, Ont.) will compete in the Lightweight Men's Quad (BLM4x) event alongside Emerson Crick, Giancarlo DiPompeo, and Connor Dodds. Celia captured a gold and silver at the OUA Championship with Queen's last season.
Ellison (Halifax, N.S.) will compete in the Women's Eight (BW8+) event alongside Lucy Black, Lyndsey Bryden, Mira Calder, Fiona Elliott, Parker Illingworth, Jana Peachey, Ellie Sousa, and Jack Pankratz. Ellison captured a gold and silver at the OUA Championship, and silver at the CURC last season with Queen's. Ellison also earned a bronze medal at the National Rowing Championships last year.
Hubbard (Calgary, Alta.) will compete in the Men's Double (BM2x) event alongside Michael Ciepiela. Hubbard earned a gold and bronze at the OUA Championship, and silver and bronze at the National Rowing Championships last year. Hubbard also finished sixth at the Pan Am Games Qualification Regatta earlier this year.
Queen's Rowing Head Coach Katie Bruggeling will also be part of Canada's contingent at the World Rowing U23 Championships as part of the coaching staff. Bruggeling was named a Rowing Canada Aviron 'Made in Canada' coach earlier this year.
The 2023 World Rowing U23 Championships will take place in Plovdiv, Bulgaria from July 19-23.
And incoming Queen's Rowing recruit Julie Teixeira is on the roster for Canada's U19 team.
