Gaels fall to Victoria, will go for national bronze Sunday morning

| By:
MONTREAL (November 22, 2019) - The Ontario champion No.2 Queen's Gaels fell 14-8 to the No.3 Victoria Vikes in the Canadian University Men's Rugby Championship (CUMRC) semifinal hosted by Concordia.

GAME FLOW
The two sides dug in their heels in the opening half of a cold and windy afternoon tilt at the home stadium on the Concordia Stingers in Montreal. The Gaels were continuously up against their own goal line but time and time again were able to gain advantage or get the ball out off of forcing a turnover.

Victoria had a shot at a penalty kick midway through the half but it missed. Again the Vikes pushed the Gaels defence toward their try line and despite breaking the plane in the final seconds of the half were not able to touch down for a try. Moments later the whistle blew and the two sides went into halftime knotted at 0-0.

In the second half, the Vikes were able to put down the first points of the afternoon. Logan Martin-Freek touched down and the conversion was good to put Victoria ahead 7-0.

Just six minutes later the Gaels responded. Out of a scrum, it was Joshua Engelbrecht who burst through the Vikes defence out wide and landed in for the Gaels first points of the day. The conversion attempt missed and Queen's still trailed 7-5.

After Victoria took a late 14-5 lead the Gaels continued to push for points in the final minutes. Being down two scores they elected for a quick penalty to cut the lead to 14-8 after Dylan Young knocked the ball through the posts.

For the Gaels time simply ran out on them and Victoria held on for a 14-8 win.

Queen's will now advance to the CUMRC bronze medal match on Sunday morning at 10:30 am. They will meet the loser of the second semifinal which pits UBC against the host Concordia Stingers.
