KINGSTON, Ont (Oct. 28, 2019) - The Queen's Gaels field hockey finished fifth at OUA Championship, Queen's Fencing hosted their annual Hugh Munby Open Fencing Tournament, and the Queen's Gaels sailing team claimed the 2019 CICSA League championship with all events taking this past weekend.
Field Hockey
The Gaels finished the regular season in fourth place matching them against the Waterloo Warriors in the quarterfinals at the OUA Championships on Friday. Queen's started off strong as Cassidy Grimes opened the scoring in the 21st minute. The Gaels came out strong after the halftime break and earned a penalty corner in the first minute of the second half. Graduating player Leigh Janssen successfully executed the corner play putting the Gaels ahead 2-0. Waterloo worked tirelessly and were able to tie the game in the 46 minute. Tied at 2-2 the game would be decided in a penalty shootout. Claudia Aparacio stood on her head in the net for Queen's but unfortunately Queen's lost 2-1 in the shootout. The result meant Queen's would play McMaster in a consolation match on Saturday to see who would play in the 5/6 and 7/8 placement matches to be held Sunday.
Queen's was determined to prove themselves on Saturday afternoon and played a strong match against McMaster. Queen's scored two goals in the first half of the game, both on penalty corners. Abby Beaton and Brooke Ritchie, both second year players on the team help Queen's have a 2-0 lead at halftime. In the second half of the game four different players found the back of the McMaster net to solidify a 6-0 win.
Sunday saw Queen's face McGill in the 5/6 placement game. The Gaels started the game strong and earned a corner six minutes into the match. Third year captain Izzy Mastantuono scored and put the Gaels on the scoreboard. Rookie Abby Janssen made a beautiful pass to her sister, Leigh Janssen to score in the 19th minute of play. Mastantuono added two more goals in the second half both on penalty corner plays. Leigh Janssen also scored a goal on a penalty corner and captain and graduating player Mairead Corrigan scored in the 51st minute, as Queen's dominated McGill for a 5-2 victory.
Though the Gaels had been hoping to play for a medal this weekend they were able to finish the season strong with two solid wins. The team says goodbye to defense Jordan Bouman, midfield Mairead Corrigan, and forwards Leigh Janssen and captain Becca Gray.
In addition, Abigail Janssen earned OUA Rookie of the Year honours while Isabelle Mastantuono was named an OUA All-Star for their efforts this season.
Fencing
Queen's Fencing hosted their annual Hugh Munby Open Fencing Tournament this past weekend in the Upper Gym at the ARC. The Open hosted 156 participants in six events, including 9 University Clubs, as well as a number of private fencing clubs and individual participants from across Ontario and into Quebec. Queen's Fencing Club had an excellent turnout of 35 fencers, three of whom earned medals.
Despite facing extremely tough competition, the Queen's team fenced strongly on both days. Medals were earned in both Men's and Women's Sabre, with first-year Queen's fencers Alex Sun winning the Gold Medal in Men's Sabre on Day 1 and first-year Caroline Whitehead winning bronze in Women's Sabre the following day. Queen's brought home a second bronze on Day 2, with second-year fencer Emily Mason's third place finish in the Women's Epee event
Queen's Fencing Club will look to build upon their success as they head to the RMC Invitational Team Competition on Nov. 1-2, 2019.

Sailing
The Queen's Gaels sailing team claimed the 2019 CICSA League championship this past weekend.

Men's Lacrosse
The Queen's men's lacrosse team closed out their regular this weekend in action against the Carleton Ravens and Bishop's Gaiters. The Gaels defeated Carleton 16-3 on Saturday, but fell against Bishop's 7-4 on Sunday.
Wrestling
The Queen's wrestling team opened their season this past weekend at the Concordia Invitational in Montreal, Quebec. Karly Kundrinko placed second in the 59 kg women's weight class after defeating the junior national champion and bronze medalist from the Pan Am Games. Highlights for Kary included pin under a minute and a subsequent pin in just nine seconds. Karly only took one loss this weekend, only losing to the current National and Pan Am champion bringing home silver for the Gaels. First-year Sam Keary made his debut this weekend. After a tough series of matches, Sam was able to come out with his first university win. Sam placed 7th in the 82 kg weight class. Second-year William Ye faced intense competition in the 61kg weight class, with many international wrestlers, including representatives from the United States and Italy present. William took home a second round victory and an overall sixth place finish in the 61kg weight class after a loss to the Americans. The Gaels will return to action next weekend at McMaster.
