KINGSTON, Ont. (August 18, 2018) – Both the Gaels men's and women's soccer teams were victorious over McGill in their opening game at the Old Four Tournament. The women's team followed that up with a tournament championship victory on Sunday while the men finished the weekend 1-1.
WOMEN'S SUNDAY
The Gaels women's team took the tournament down to the wire, but in the 90th minute
Sarah Nixon was able to put the Gaels ahead and secure the Old Four title.
Queen's controlled much of the offensive play and fired a game high nine shots on target in the afternoon match. Three of those came off the foot of
Christie Gray for Queen's which was one shy of the total for the entire Toronto team.
In the 90th minute it was
Sarah Nixon who broke the deadlock for her first of the tournament. Marinna Rebecca stopped all four shots she faced in net for the Gaels.
The consolation final saw Western finish with a 2-1 win over McGill to close their record at 1-1 for the weekend.
MEN'S SUNDAY
In the men's Old Four finale the Queen's Gaels met the Western Mustangs to decide this year's champion.
Western put the pressure on Gaels keeper Alex Dimock all match as they outshot Queen's 9-2.
It took until the 80th minute before the match saw its first strike which came from Western. The Mustangs followed it up with another in the 89th to go up 2-0. The Gaels fired in a penalty from
Michael Chang in the 90th minute to cut the deficit but the Mustangs held on for the victory.
In the consolation game the Toronto Varsity Blues and McGill Redmen played out to a 1-1 draw.
WOMEN'S SATURDAY
The Gaels women's team came away with a commanding 2-0 win at Miklas-McCarney field earlier this afternoon.
They opened the scoring in the 34
th minute as Chloe Cabral buried her first goal in a Queen's uniform.
Then in the 63
rd minute,
Alexandra Doane struck once again increasing their lead to 2-0. Doane, who had scored twice yesterday against Alberta, is proving that she's already in mid-season form.
Both
Alanna Richardson and
Anna Stephenson combined for five saves and the win in net.
The Gaels will play in the gold medal game against the Toronto Varsity Blues, who won a 1-0 final against the Western Mustangs. Game time is set for 1pm at Richardson Stadium.
MEN'S SATURDAY
The Gaels men's team picked up a 2-1 victory earlier today at Tindall Field.
Michael Chang, who scored twice for the Gaels, dominated the game. His first goal came in the 40
th minute and then he struck again early in the second half as he buried another in the 50
th minute.
The Redmen quickly stopped the Gaels momentum as defender Joshua Liss found the net in the 54
th minute.
However, OUA All-Star
Alex Jones kept the door shut as the Redmen piled on five shots in the second half.
With the win, the men's team will also be moving on to the gold medal game as they take on Western. The Mustangs came away with a 5-2 win over Toronto and will play the Gaels on Sunday at 3:15pm at Richardson Stadium.
