After being the host team of the 2017 women's hockey national championship, the Gaels are hoping to make another appearance this year in London as the U SPORTS finals are hosted by Western. 2016-17 saw Queen's with a slow start before putting together an eight-game winning streak during the regular season to finish sixth in the OUA. After forcing a third game in their opening round series with Toronto, Queen's lost in double overtime to the Varsity Blues as they were eliminated from OUA play.
The Gaels had a spot as hosts at the National Championship and nearly upset the No.1 UBC team falling 2-1. Queen's bounced back with a win over StFX before losing to SMU to finish sixth.
The Gaels will look to get back in the hunt in 2017-18 as they see a strong returning core centred around last year's captain
Jessica Wakefield along with scoring threats
Addi Halladay and
Katrina Manoukarakis.
Between the pipes the Gaels have a healthy and now veteran
Stephanie Pascal who will head into her fourth year at Queen's but saw just her first full slate of action in 2016-17 after making her way back from injury. Pascal played the second most minutes in the OUA last season and was a big reason why they nearly upset UBC and defeated StFX at the national championship.
Quote from the head coach:
"Successfully hosting the National Championship last year gave our returning players a strong incentive to earn our way back there this season. In addition, we have seven fantastic incoming players that we can count on to make an immediate impact. We are confident that we have the necessary pieces in place to challenge for an OUA championship, but we also know that success won't come without exceptional hustle, heart, passion, unity and a full commitment to excellence." –
