Gaels This Week - Think Pink Weekend with Football, Soccer, Men's Rugby at Home

Gaels This Week – Think Pink with the Varsity Leadership Council this weekend! This Saturday Queen's Athletics is having a "Think Pink" day in support of breast cancer awareness. Breast cancer affects millions of people and together we can make a future without breast cancer possible. Come out to any of these games in pink attire and help us reach our fundraising goal by donating to the Varsity Athlete CIBC Run For The Cure page or the Men's rugby page. See you Saturday!

Football hosts Toronto in the Game of the Week, soccer hosts Ryerson and Toronto, and men's rugby hosts McMaster. Women's rugby plays at McMaster, while rowing and cross country get their seasons underway on the road. Plus, the women's hockey team hosts their preseason tournament in Napanee in preparation for hosting the CIS Championship in March. Watch in person or on OUA.tv to catch the most Gaels action.

WOMEN'S SOCCER
RECORD: 4-2 Last time out: W 1-0 vs. Carleton STREAK: Won 1
WHO'S HOT?: Madison Tyrell - Earned 2nd cleansheet of the season vs. Carleton

The women's soccer team hosts the Ryerson Rams (2-4-1) Saturday at 1pm on Miklas-McCarney Field and the Toronto Varsity Blues (2-4-1) Sunday in Richardson Stadium, also at 1pm.

Queen's played a pair of games last weekend, starting with a 1-0 road loss to No.2 Ottawa before rebounding against Carleton in their first game at the revitalized Richardson Stadium. Brittany Almeida (Kingston, Ont.) scored the lone goal of the weekend for the Gaels in their 1-0 win over Carleton. Keeper Madison Tyrell (White Rock, Ont.) earned an eight-save cleansheet in the win, and her six saves against the undefeated Gee-Gees held Ottawa to just one goal for the first time this season.

The Gaels were 1-0-1 against Ryerson in 2015, tying 0-0 at home before winning 3-0 on the road. Jenny Wolever (Toronto) netted two goals against the Rams last year, with Laura Callender (Ottawa) adding the third. Ryerson played just one game last weekend, against their traveling partner Toronto, which ended in a scoreless tie as the Rams were shut out for the fifth time this season. Alessia Carvalho is the leading scorer on Ryerson's roster with a pair of goals that came against Trent.

For Toronto, last weekend's tie against Ryerson snapped a four-game losing streak. Varsity Blues keeper Tori Edgar has played the full 90 minutes in all seven games this season, and hasn't allowed more than two goals in a game. Natasha Klasios leads the Toronto lineup with five of her team's eight goals so far in 2016. The Gaels were also 1-0-1 against the Varsity Blues last year, tying 1-1 at home before earning 1-0 road win. Sarah Nixon (Oakville, Ont.) scored her first CIS goal for the Gaels in the tie.

MEN'S SOCCER
RECORD: 4-1-1 Last time out: L 4-2 vs. Carleton STREAK: Lost 1
WHO'S HOT?: Julian Gailiunas - The rookie scored his first 2 CIS goals last weekend

The men's soccer team hosts an undefeated Ryerson Rams (6-0) squad with a No.3 CIS ranking Saturday on Miklas-McCarney Field before hosting the Toronto Varsity Blues (3-1-2) in Richardson Stadium on Sunday. Both games start at 3:15pm.

After beating RMC 3-0 in a Wednesday game, the Gaels suffered their first loss of the season at the hands of the Carleton Ravens. Rohan Sarna (Mississauga, Ont.), Oliver Coren (Toronto), and Jacob Schroeter (Ottawa) scored for the Gaels against RMC. In the loss, Tonko Bacelic (Mississauga, Ont.) scored the first goal for the tricolour, while the second was an own goal by the Ravens. Queen's was booked seven times against Carleton, with six yellow cards and one red card. Kristian Zanette (Thunder Bay, Ont.) will not be allowed to play against Ryerson after he was ejected from last weekend's game for a tackle in the box.

Ryerson couldn't beat Queen's in 2015, as the teams tied 1-1 in Kingston, Ont. before the Gaels won 4-1 on the road. This year, Ryerson has been victorious in all six of their games, and has only allowed a single goal against. As a result, keeper Praveen Ahilan is at the OUA leader in virtually all goal keeping stats categories. Most recently, Ryerson beat Toronto 1-0 on a goal from their leading scorer Raheem Rose.

Toronto suffered their first loss of the year last weekend at Ryerson. With a .50 goals against average, Toronto keeper Mark Rogal is second in the OUA, only having allowed three goals this season, and never more than one in a game. The Varsity Blues have a busy schedule coming into Sunday's game at Queen's, with a Wednesday game at UOIT and a game Saturday at RMC. In 2015, Toronto and Queen's split the regular season series 1-1, before the Varsity Blues ousted the Gaels in the OUA quarterfinals.

WOMEN'S RUGBY
RECORD: 2-0 Last time out: W 89-0 @ Toronto STREAK: Won 2
WHO'S HOT?: Miranda Seifert - Scored 3 tries against Toronto

The No.4 women's rugby team plays a Top 10 matchup in a rematch of last year's CIS Championship game when they travel to McMaster to play the No.1 Marauders (2-0) Friday night at 7pm.

Queen's is coming off a shutout win at Toronto, where Nadia Popov (Newmarket, Ont.) scored a game-high 17 points in the Gaels 89-0 victory. Miranda Seifert (Regina) had more tries than any of her teammates, scoring three times for the tricolour. Queen's has scored 160 points through two games, second most in the OUA, and only allowed five against, which is the lowest in the league.

The last time the Gaels and Marauders met was in the CIS Championship game, where Queen's Cinderella story was spoiled at home. McMaster has enjoyed two comfortable wins this year, first blanking Toronto and then defeating York 42-13. Sara Svoboda had 17 points against York and has 27 on the season with two tries against Toronto. The Marauders are riding a 12 game winning streak dating back to the first game of the 2015 season, where Queen's defeated McMaster 15-14.

MEN'S RUGBY
RECORD: 2-1 Last time out: W 67-5 vs. Laurier STREAK: Won 1
WHO'S HOT?: Nicholas DeLallo - Scored 3 tries vs. Laurier

The men's rugby team plays on Nixon Field for the second straight week. The Gaels host McMaster (3-0) on Saturday at 1pm in search of a second consecutive victory.

Last weekend, Queen's rebounded from their first loss in 11 games with a convincing 67-5 win against a previously undefeated Laurier side. Nicholas DeLallo (Ottawa) scored a game-high three tries for the Gaels, and Kainoa Lloyd added to his team-leading total of 39 points this season.

The Marauders beat RMC 23-5 on 20 unanswered points in their most recent game. Leading McMaster's offence this year has been rookie fly half Will Kelly, who has scored a total of 31 points for the Marauders through three games this season. The last time these two teams met, the Gaels claimed a 27-10 win, while McMaster last beat Queen's 18-13 during the 2014 regular season.

Come out to support your Gaels in person at Nixon Field or watch it live on OUA.tv!

CROSS COUNTRY
The men's and women's cross country teams travel to the Western Invitational this weekend for their first meet of the 2016 season. Gael Alex Wilkie placed first in the race in 2015.

ROWING
The men and women on the rowing team are looking to repeat last year's success at the Head of the Rideau Regatta this weekend. In 2015, Queen's brought home the Kandahar overall team point's trophy for a second consecutive year after claiming first in seven events.

Follow @GaelsRowing on Twitter for more live updates throughout the regatta season.

WOMEN'S HOCKEY
The women's hockey team plays host to Montreal, Alberta, Ottawa, and Waterloo at their preseason Invitational this weekend at the Strathcona Paper Centre in Napanee. Queen's will host the CIS Championships at the same venue in March. The Gaels play Alberta at 7:30pm on Friday, Ottawa at 7:30pm on Saturday, and Montreal at 3pm on Sunday.
