Men's Rugby Announces 2016 Hall of Fame Inductees

KINGSTON, Ont. (September 14, 2016) - The Queen's University Rugby Football Club is proud to announce the 2016 inductees in the men's rugby Hall of Fame. This year's inductees consist of two builders, Luke Follwell and Pete Huigenbos, and three players, Alistair Clark, Steve Orchard, and Ryan Kruyne.

Builders
Luke Follwell
While a player at Queen's Luke was an active member of the QRFC executive where he applied his amazing organizational skills to planning socials and in his final year a team tour to Chile. He pulled on the 1st XV jersey in his last three seasons while at Queen's. Upon completion of his undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering Luke immediately became heavily involved in the QRFC as both a Manager and Assistant Coach.
As Team Manager Luke's actions have been responsible for building QRFC into the Rugby Club that it is today.  He and the coaching staff share the philosophy that you need to play games to become a better rugby player. Luke's skills in arranging opposition, referees and fields is the reason that on any given weekend in the fall QRFC will field up to 8 teams in multiple locations across Ontario, Quebec and New York State.
Luke also acted as a team assistant coach from 2004-2013.  After ten years Luke has stepped away from coaching, but continues in his responsibilities as Team Manager mentoring up and coming dedicated coaching staff to ensure the legacy of QRFC lives on.

Pete Huigenbos
As a player, Pete played several years as a First Team player and was a leader on the OUA Championship Team of 2001 leading the league in tries and being named an OUA All-Star. After finishing his Queen's playing career he went on to play representative rugby in Ontario with the Brantford Harlequins where he was part of the 2003 McCormack Cup Championship team and MVP, Niagara Thunder (Captain) and the Ottawa Harlequins (Captain). He stayed involved with the Queen's program as an assistant coach.
Since becoming Head Coach in 2004, Pete has been primarily responsible for building a culture of excellence at Queen's Rugby – by focusing on exceptional Varsity/First Team performance while balancing the integrity of the Club structure (i.e. movement between the 6-8 teams, maintaining camaraderie amongst Varsity & non-Varsity players, etc.).
Pete has continued to build the Queen's Rugby club into a holistic program that embodies the values of rugby. He started the foundation of not excluding any players based on skill, and continued a winning and respectful culture at Queens. He is a very passionate coach focused on player development and sport tactics, someone who always puts the well-being of his players ahead of his own without ever compromising performance or team development. During Pete's tenure, 5 players have gone on to be capped for Canadian National Men's XV, 3 for Canadian National 7s, 6 for Canada A and Maple Leafs and several for Canada Under 20.
He should be credited with building a very strong university rugby program in Canada and fostering a positive environment for men to grow both personally and athletically.

Players
Alistair Clark
Alistair is one of few recent players who spent their entire four years playing solely for the 1st XV, two years of which he served as Captain.  During his time while on the first XV Alistair was known for his positive attitude, tireless work rate, exceptional skill.  Alistair was always willing to help a younger player improve his game, as flanker's following his footsteps can attest to, and instilling confidence in younger players cracking the 1st XV lineup.
Following his Queen's playing career Alistair continued to play for the Blues and in 2016 Alistair was selected to the Canadian Men's Senior 15s.  To date he has 6 caps and 1 try.
Alistair continues to contribute to QRFC by attending training camp annually to help instill his knowledge and experience on the next crop of rugby players.

Steve Orchard
Steve played 5 seasons for the QRFC, all of them on the first XV.  Steve was well known for his physical play, incredible intensity and leadership through example on the field.
During his final season at Queen's Steve was recognized for his outstanding achievements both on and off the pitch by being award the Jenkins Trophy.  The Jenkins Trophy is awarded annual to the top male athlete who best displays qualities of scholastic achievement, competitiveness, leadership, sportsmanship, dedication and exceptional contributions to his team
Steve's involvement with the team did not end on the pitch.  During his time at Queen's Steve also ran the QRFC executive, developed the first QRFC website, organized the formal, and coordinated the 2004 tour to Chile.
Steve continues to be heavily involved in QRFC through his support for the annual golf tournament which he chaired in 2014 and was a member of the Golf Tournament Board in 2013 & 2015.

Ryan Kruyne
Ryan is the true embodiment of the QRFC spirit.  Ryan started his first season on the 4th team but by the end of his second year he was a regular on the 1st XV.  Ryan was known for his incredible work ethic, physical play and leadership.  His leadership truly shown through when, during his final season, he was asked to take over as team captain when the current captain had to step away for Provincial duties.  Ryan met the challenge head on, and continually rose to the top as the side's best player.
Despite the fact that Ryan was a flanker/lock he was also the kicker.   During the 2009 OUA Final Ryan was the one who calmly slotted a 40 meter penalty goal to spark a 13 point comeback to beat Western 23-19. He was the team's leader and best player on an undefeated 2009 champion team.
