Men's rugby suffers first loss of season at Guelph 18-12

GUELPH, Ont. - (September 11, 2016) - In a rematch of the 2015 OUA championship game Queen's (1-1) came up short this time around as they fell to Guelph (2-0) 18-12 on Sunday afternoon. It marks the second year in a row Queen's has had to play at Guelph in the regular season and lost. The Gaels did however win the one that mattered defeating the Gryphons at Guelph in the 2015 Championship game.

GAME FLOW
The Gaels were the first to strike in the OUA final rematch and it was none other than Kainoa Lloyd (Mississauga, Ont.) who put down the first points. A missed conversion kept the score 5-0 for the Gaels. Guelph pushed the field position in their favour to respond and decided to line up for a penalty goal which was kicked successfully by Mario Van Der Westhuizen of the Gryphons.

Just before the half as the two teams were entrenched in a defensive battle Van Der Westhurizen struck for another successful penalty goal putting Guelph ahead at the half 6-5.

The Gryphons took over to start the second half, first a try from Eric Charest-Pekeski made it 11-5 and then Guelph added a second try with a successful conversion to go in front 18-5.

The Gaels did not go away however as Michael Douros (Toronto) put down a try and after a successful conversion Queen's found themselves down just 18-12. Queen's was unable to make a final push for a try and the Gryphons held on for the 18-12 win.
