WELLAND, Ont. (November 7, 2016) - Queen's had boats earn bronze medals on the men's and women's side en route to a fifth-place team finish for the women and a sixth-place team finish for the men at the Canadian University Rowing Championship.
On the women's side,
Louise Munro (Ottawa) and
Cassidy Deane (Whistler, B.C.) earned the only medal for Queen's with a bronze finish in the heavyweight 2- in a time of 7.49.482. The Gaels had 58 points as a team to finish fifth, just two points behind Brock in fourth. Western took the top team spot for the women, followed closely by UBC. The tricolour finished one spot off the podium in the heavyweight 8+ in fourth place. The lightweight 4+ also qualified for the A Final, but came sixth. The heavyweight 1x boat had the next best finish in seventh overall, and the lightweight 2x and 1x came in 10th and 11th, respectively.
For the men, it was the lightweight 4+ boat of
Alexander Bernst (Ottawa),
Karol Stanski (Izabelin, Warsaw),
Mitchell Valic (Etobicoke , Ont.),
Nicholas Grubic (Freelton, Ont.), and cox
Michael Wightman (North Vancouver) who had the best finish of the day, collecting bronze in a time of 6.51.996, just five seconds behind the first place boat from UBC, who won the team championship for the men. Queen's finished with a team score of 56 points to finish sixth on the men's side. The lightweight 2x and heavyweight 8+ boats also qualified for their A Finals, but both finished in sixth spot. The men in the lightweight and heavyweight 1x boats for Queen's both finished eighth overall, while the heavyweight 2- came in 11th.Â
