At the OUA Championships this weekend, Queen's went 1-2 to finish sixth, losing 1-0 to Waterloo in the opener, beating McMaster 2-1 in penalties, and falling 4-0 to York in the fifth place game.
In the Gaels victory, McMaster earned a penalty stroke in the 3rd minute when the ball slipped past the goalie and hit the foot of a Queen's defender. As a result, the tricolour were down 1-0 for the majority of the game until the 65' when captain
Taylor Herrington crossed the ball to graduating player
Margot Gunning who scored her first goal of the season to even the score.
After regulation solved nothing, the game went to a 5 vs. 5 penalty shoot out, with tons of pressure on Gaels rookie goalie
Caroline Baril. Both teams scored three goals on their first five attempts, so the the game went to a sudden death shoot out. Queen's shot first, but Becca Gray wasn't able to score. Luckily, McMaster wasn't able to get past Baril either, so the game remained tied. Herrington was next up for Queen's, and was taken out by the McMaster goalie, so she was able to redo her penalty and scored nicely. The McMaster goalie was not able to score to tie the game again, so Queen's won the overtime shoot out 2-1.
The Gaels penalty shooters were:
Taylor Herrington (captain) - scored 2
Mairead Corrigan - scored 1
Becca Gray - scored 1
