Gaels This Week – Queen’s teams hit the road

The Queen's Gaels are in action on numerous fronts this weekend. Here's a rundown of when and where to catch the Gaels in action at home, or how to follow them on the road.

Football: This weekend the Gaels (2-1) will be traveling to London to play against the undefeated No. 3 ranked Western Mustangs (3-0) Saturday at 1pm at TD Stadium. The game can be seen live on OUA.tv.

Last weekend, Queen's (2-1) finished with a 47-24 victory over the Waterloo Warriors (0-3) Saturday afternoon at Richardson Stadium despite rainy weather conditions. Jesse Andrews (Arnprior, Ont.) was a force offensively for Queen's finishing the day with 204 total yards of offence with three touchdowns. Nate Hobbs (Mississauga, Ont) finished the day completing just over 50% of his passes for 223 yards with three touchdown passes.

Last time Queen's met Western they were defeated by the Mustangs 43-12 at Richardson Stadium on another rainy afternoon. Leading the Mustangs charge was quarterback Will Finch, who threw for over 300 yards and one touchdown, while also running for over a hundred yards on the wet grass to be Western's leading rusher. Jean-Gabriel Poulin had nine total tackles to lead Western's defence. Alex Carroll (Victoria) had the best day for the Gaels, picking up 88 receiving yards and a touchdown in the loss. Billy McPhee (Burlington, Ont.) finished the day 19 of 37 for 214 yards, while Derek Wiggan,(Toronto) led the Queen's defence with nine total tackles, including six solo tackles and two tackles for losses.

Men's Soccer: The Gaels men's soccer team (1-1-2) will be on the road this weekend, traveling to play Toronto (3-1-1) on Saturday at 3:15pm and No. 5 ranked Ryerson (4-0-1) on Sunday at 3:15pm. The game at Toronto can be seen live on OUA.tv.

When the men's team last faced the Toronto Varsity Blues in their first matchup of the season the Varsity Blues defeated the Gaels 3-0 in their home opener at Miklas-McCarney Field. Toronto got ahead in that game when they scored two early goals in the first half coming from Niran Sivananthan and Dakar Charles. The Gaels had quality chances to get back into the game but could not beat Toronto's goalkeeper Rab Bruce-Lockheart.

When the men's team last faced the No. 5 ranked Ryerson Rams the Gaels conceded a late second half penalty kick earning a 1-1 draw against Ryerson at Miklas-McCarney field Sunday afternoon. Queen's striker Tonko Bacelic (Mississauga, Ont.) scored the only goal for the Gaels off a rebound header by Jacob Schroeter (Ottawa). After the Gaels conceded the late penalty kick, Queen's goalkeeper Kyle Lanzinger (Carleton Place, Ont.) made crucial saves to keep the game tied.

Women's Soccer: The Gaels women's soccer team (1-1-3) will also be on the road this weekend, traveling to play Toronto (3-1-1) on Saturday at 1pm and Ryerson (1-2-2) on Sunday at 1pm. The game at Toronto can be seen live on OUA.tv.

When the women's team last faced the Toronto Varsity Blues in the home opener the game ended in a 1-1 draw at Miklas-McCarney Field. During the game the Gaels controlled the possession, but conceded the first goal when Toronto forward Nicki Parkes deflected the ball past the Gaels goalkeeper on a set play. Sarah Nixon (Oakville, Ont.) tied up the game for the Gaels in the 33rd minute with a strike from the left side of the 18 yard box. The goal for Nixon was her first career CIS goal that she struck after substituting on.

When the women's team last faced the Ryerson Rams this season the game ended in a 0-0 draw at Miklas-McCarney Field. Michaila Frawley (Victoria) earned the clean sheets in the tie for the Gaels stopping three shots on target.

Men's Rugby: The Gaels men's rugby team (1-1) will be traveling to Waterloo (1-0) on Sunday afternoon to face the Warriors at 1pm.

Last weekend the Gaels held their home opener against Brock, where they defeated the Badgers with a convincing 40-0 win at Nixon Field. The team was led that afternoon by Lucas Rumball (Toronto) and Alex Colborne who finished the day with five conversions scored. Defensively the Gaels didn't allow a single try all afternoon shutting out the Brock offence.

Women's Rugby: The No.2 ranked Gaels women's rugby team (1-0) will be traveling to Peterborough on Saturday morning to face the Trent Excalibur (0-1) at 11am.

Last weekend the Gaels grabbed a second half comeback win against defending OUA champion Marauders in their season home opener at Nixon Field. The game changed for the Gaels when Emma Chown (Barrie, Ont.) with her trademark agility found a seam in the Marauder's offence breaking away for a near 100 meter run to put down the first try of the game for Queen's. With another McEwen convert, the Gaels tightened the score up to 14-10. The Gaels battled hard to catch the Marauders and, taking advantage of uneven numbers, managed to get Hannah Van Luven (Inverary, Ont.) through with a try giving Queen's their first lead of the game at 15-14. Queen's held on for a big first win on the season against the former champions.

Cross-Country: The No.8 ranked men's and No. 6 ranked women's cross country teams travel to Guelph on Saturday to race in the New Balance Vic Matthews Open.

At last year's OUA championships hosted at Fort Henry in Kingston the Gaels women's team took home the team bronze for having top results of 3rd, 6th and 12th. The OUA All-Star Julie-Anne Staehli (Lucknow, Ont.) led the way the Gaels finishing with the individual bronze medal.

On the men's side it was Alex Wilkie (Almonte, Ont.) who finished fifth place which was the best finish behind the Guelph Gryphons who finished with the top four finishes at the Championships. Another Gael Eric Wynards (Lyn, Ont.) had a strong performance and would earn top rookie honors being named the OUA Men's Rookie of the Year.

Men's Hockey: The men's hockey team will play their annual exhibition game against RMC on Friday at Lou Jeffries Gananoque Recreation Centre at 7:30pm.

In last year's annual exhibition game the Gaels had no trouble finding the back of the net as they defeated the RMC Paladins 7-0. The Gaels displayed their offensive talent against RMC as they managed to score seven goals in their first exhibition game of the 2014-15 season. Six different skaters registered goals for the Gaels, including Yannick Laflamme (Thetford Mines, Que.) who netted a pair. Goaltender Kevin Bailie (Belleville, Ont.) and Chris Clarke (Fall River, N.S.) were perfect on the night combining for the 22 save shutout. Final shots in the game were 48-22 in favour of Queen's.

Women's Hockey: The women's hockey team hosts UBC at 7:30pm on Friday, McGill at 4:00pm on Saturday, and Montreal at 12:00pm on Sunday at the Queen's Invitational Tournament this weekend, with all games to be played at the Invista Centre. For more information please click here.

Women's Volleyball: The women's volleyball team heads to Montreal this weekend to take part in the Challenge Carabins Quebec-Ontario Tournament.
