Gaels This Week - CIS Top 10 Showdown in women's hockey highlights fan appreciation night

The Queen's Gaels are in action on numerous fronts this weekend. Here's a rundown of when and where to catch your Gaels in action at home, or how to follow them on the road.

GAME OF THE WEEK
Women's Hockey
This weekend the No.4 Gaels (12-2-3) host the No.7 Guelph Gryphons (11-2-3) on Friday at 7:30pm in the game of the week and then host the Brock Badgers (0-12-3) on Saturday at 7:30pm with both games being played at the Memorial Centre.  Last Saturday the Gaels got back on track as they defeated the York Lions 3-2.  Danielle Girard (Sarnia, Ont.) was credited with the first goal for the Gaels as she buried her first of the season.  The other scorers for Queen's on Saturday afternoon were captain Shawna Griffin (Redwood Meadows, Alta.) and Mary Coughlin (Amherstburg, Ont.) with the game-winner.  This weekend the Gaels have a big matchup as they face another top ten CIS opponent, the Gryphons, who defeated Queen's earlier this season with a single goal 1-0 in Guelph.  The Gaels also faced Brock earlier this season in a close game but Queen's managed to edge the Badgers 4-3.  The team has yet to lose a game at home this season and have a record of 8-0-0 at the friendly confines of the Memorial Centre. Friday night is #FanFriday Fan Appreciation Night! The first 100 people win receive a 6 inch sub courtesy of Subway.

Men's Hockey
This weekend the Gaels (9-11-1) hit the road as they play their lone game of the weekend against the No.8 McGill Redmen (16-5-0) on Friday at 7pm in Montreal.  Last Friday, Queen's was defeated by Laurier 3-2 as they were denied late scoring opportunities but on Saturday it was a different story as the Gaels overtook Waterloo 3-2 in overtime to end their losing streak.  Darcy Greenaway (Wilton, Ont.) buried the game-winner in overtime as he received a perfect cross-crease pass from Corey Bureau (Amherstview, Ont.). Greenaway is the top scorer for the Gaels this season and currently ranks 13th in the CIS with his 12 goals.  Queen's faced the Redmen earlier this season in their home opener but were defeated 4-3 in the final minutes as McGill took advantage of a tripping penalty against Queen's.  The Gaels will attempt to exact their revenge on their old four rivals in this weekends matchup.

Women's Basketball
This weekend the Gaels (7-3) host the Toronto Varsity Blues (6-4) on Friday at 6pm and the No.8 Ryerson Rams (9-3) on Saturday at 6pm in the ARC main gym.  Last weekend Queen's continued their winning streak as they defeated the York Lions on the road 66-56. Jenny Wright (Kingston, Ont.) led the Gaels in their win with 15 points while Liz Boag (Kingston, Ont.) and Andrea Priamo (Guelph, Ont.) both scored 12 points of their own.  Queen's is currently ranked sixth in the CIS averaging 71.5 points per game.  The Gaels have yet to play either of this weekend's opponents this season but will be gunning to extend their five game winning streak. Friday night is #FanFriday Fan Appreciation Night! The first 250 people win receive a 6 inch sub courtesy of Subway.

Men's Basketball
This weekend the Gaels (3-7) host the Toronto Varsity Blues (3-7) on Friday at 8pm and the No.3 Ryerson Rams (10-2) on Saturday at 8pm in the ARC main gym.  Last weekend Queen's was defeated by the York Lions 76-63 in a close game.  The two teams were fairly evenly matched but the Lions had a final push in the fourth quarter that the Gaels were unable to match.  Despite the loss, Greg Faulkner (Kingston, Ont.) managed to lead the Gaels with 20 points.  Currently, Faulkner ranks fourth in the CIS averaging 20.9 points per game.  The Gaels have yet to play either of this weekend's opponents this season but will look to use home court to their advantage.

Women's Volleyball
In their final two home games for the season, this weekend the Gaels (10-4) host the No.4 Toronto Varsity Blues (13-0) on Saturday at 1pm and the Ryerson Rams (10-3) on Sunday at 1pm in the ARC main gym.  Last weekend Queen's played a single match against their cross town rivals, the RMC Paladins and defeated them seamlessly 3-0 in three sets. Queen's was led by middle's Katie Hagarty (Aurora, Ont.) and Niki Slikboer (Seagrave, Ont.) who were the only Gaels to reach double-digits in point totals with 10 and 11 respectively.  Katie finished with eight kills on 17 attacks with no errors while Slikboer hit 10 kills for points for a 0.562 percentage.  Queen's faced both of this weekend's opponents earlier this season on the road but were defeated 3-1 by Toronto and 3-0 by Ryerson.  The Gaels will look to pick up some valuable points against a few teams that sit just ahead of the Gaels in the OUA standings. On Sunday the Gaels will honour their graduating student-athletes Alexa Scarcello, Shannon Hopkins and Emilie Normand in a pre-game ceremony.

Men's Volleyball
In their final two home games for the season, this weekend the Gaels (9-5) host the Toronto Varsity Blues (3-12) on Saturday at 3pm and the No.9 Ryerson Rams (11-3) on Sunday at 3pm in the ARC main gym.   Last Friday Queen's defeated the RMC Paladins in a three set sweep but fell to the now No.1 team in the country, the McMaster Marauders, 3-0 in a well fought match on Sunday.  On Friday, Mike Tomlinson (Stratford, Ont.) led the scoring for the Gaels with 11 kills and two serving aces and on Sunday Markus Trence (Orangeville, Ont.) was on fire with 12 kills.  Despite the loss, the Gaels defence was strong as Scott Brunet (Calgary, Alta.) led the Gaels with four huge blocks and Tomlinson close behind with three.  Queen's is currently ranked seventh in the CIS with their team total of 69 solo blocks to shut down their opposition.  The Gaels faced both of this weekend opponents earlier this season as they fell to Ryerson 3-0 and defeated Toronto 3-2.  The team will have a chance to knock off a Rams team that sits just ahead of them in the OUA standings on home court. Queen's will honour their graduating athletes on Sunday as Philippe Goyer (Ottawa) and Aaron Nusbaum (Aurora, Ont.) receive recognition pre-game.
