Brampton, Ont. (October 27, 2014) - The Gaels won a bronze medal at the OUA Championship in field hockey, after beating York 2-1 in the third place game on Sunday in Brampton.
Last year, the team earned their first playoff position in six years, ranking fifth after the weekend of competition in York. This year, Queen's drastically improved their performance and is coming home with a bronze medal.
Having held the third place the OUA standings all season, Queen's was slotted to play Dalhousie, the winning Atlantic team, in their Friday quarter-final match. Queen's held control of the ball for most of the first half and won ten offensive short corners. Fifth year player
Fiona Downey, named to the OUA all-start team, scored a goal off a short corner with a low, hard hit to the corner of the net. In the second half of the game, Downey proceeded to stop a goal on the only Dalhousie short corner.Â
The win placed the Gaels against Guelph in the semi-final and in contention for a CIS berth. Unfortunately, Queen's fell 3-0 to the Gryphons after a hard fought match, which was not without diligent defensive play from all the Gaels.
Queen's proceeded to play York in the Bronze medal game on Sunday. It was a nail-biter for players, coaches, and fans alike, as
Taylor Herrington managed to run the ball into the circle and put it past York into the corner of the net, her seventh goal of the season after a scoreless first half. The lead was not held for long, York tied it up on a scramble in the Queen's circle. York's goal increased the intensity as both teams fought for the lead and an OUA medal. The Gaels defensive line made some diving saves in their circle to hold the score. Late in the second half, a York player received a green card for an illegal tackle. With the man advantage, Queen's Taylor Herington carried the ball into the circle and sent a backhand pass to graduating fourth year
Lindsay Bjornson, who proceeded to tip the ball into the net to score the winning goal.
The team would like to thank all of the parents and fans who came out to Brampton to support them in the OUA's, and they are looking forward to a productive off-season before returning to play next year.Â
