Varsity Clubs Update - September 30, 2013

A recap of Varsity Club action from the past week.

Women's Field Hockey:
The Gaels travelled to Guelph this past weekend to face off against the Waterloo Warriors and the York Lions. The women lost a well fought game against Waterloo on Saturday evening, ending in a 1-0 loss. On Sunday morning Queen's took to the field at 9am to challenge McGill which resulted in a 1-1. The Gaels stand at a current record of 1-2-1 overall. They are next in action this Saturday on Tindall field at 10:45am against the Guelph Gryphons. 

Women's Ultimate
The women's ultimate team was busy this past weekend at Woodbine Park in Kingston Ontario, where they played seven games and finished seventh out of twelve teams. On Saturday, the Gaels were off to a slow start with a loss against Guelph and McGill. The women were persistent though, finishing off the day with a 15-2 win against Brock and 15-0 win against Toronto B. Queen's lost their first two games on Sunday to a couple of strong Ottawa teams. The girls rebounded to win 11-8 against Waterloo, ending their weekend with a 3-4 record.

Fast Pitch
Queen's fast pitch played three double headers this past weekend against Ottawa, Laurier and Waterloo. Queen's hosted Ottawa at Garrigan Park falling 3-4 in the first game and 1-4 in the second. They played Laurier in St. Agatha on Saturday losing the first in a nail biter, 6-7 and then 1-10 in the second game. The Gaels played their last two games against Waterloo on Sunday afternoon where they came up short by one run each game. Queen's takes on Windsor and Western on the road this coming weekend.

Cycling
Queen's University Varsity Cycling Club competed at the Mansfield Outdoor Centre September 21-22 on a muddy and rainy terrain. It was a series of three separate events: an eliminator, a time trial and a classic XC race. The notable finishers in the eliminator circuit were Etienne Moreau winning Men's A, Tori Giangrande winning Women's A, Andrea Burley winning Women's B and Damon Richardson finishing 3rd in Men's B.

The time trial event had three of the fastest finishers tying for first. Etienne, tied with two riders from Guelph, rode the course in 8:18 exactly to take the victory. Tori Giangrande won the Women's A time trial in 10:05. Nichola Bendle won the Women's B TT in 12:18 in her first mountain bike race weekend ever.

The last day of the event hosted the classic XC race where Nichola Bendle finished first and placed 2nd overall for the combined weekend results. Etienne Moreau finished in 2nd on the day and took the overall weekend victory. Tori managed to capture the overall weekend victory as well. In Women's B, Andrea Burley also captured the overall gold medal with a strong 2nd place finish on the day. Quin Robertson, in Men's B, finished 2nd on the day and also 2nd for the overall weekend series.

Sailing
This past weekend the Queen's Sailing Team competed at the North Fall #1 Qualifier in Geneva, NY and the Princeton Women's Regatta in Perth Amboy, NJ.  The Gaels were represented at North 1 by Mac Morrin, Matthew Sherar, John Machum, Will Jones, and Claire Boileau and placed 8th out of 18 schools at this highly competitive regatta.  At Princeton Nicole Czegledy, Denby McDonnell, Victoria Restivo, and Dayna Hellmann represented Queen's and sailed their way to a fourth place finish.

The weekend of September 21-22 saw the Queen's Sailing Team participate in the Maritime Fall Open Regatta. Skipper Joy MacDonald and crew David Kagan competed in the A-fleet finishing in twelfth overall, with a sixth place on Sunday afternoon. First year skipper Maura Condon and veteran crew Anders Brown competed in the B fleet and had a great first showing. 

This coming weekend Queen's will compete at the Intrepid Match Racing Regatta in Annapolis, MD and the Queen's Open, here in Kingston. All are invited to come watch racing at the Kingston Yacht Club on both Saturday and Sunday.
