KINGSTON, Ont. (October 26, 2013) - The Queen's Gaels will advance to the OUA championship, and look to win their second league banner in as many years, after a well-deserved win against the McMaster Marauders, 38-3. The Gaels battled against high winds and freezing temperatures to earn the win.
The Gaels put the first points on the board, with a quick try by
Brendan Sloan (Peterborough, Ont.) in the fourth minute.
Adam McQueen (Canmore, B.C.) kicked the conversion following Sloan's try to give Queen's an early 7-0 lead. The Marauders quickly gained their footing and looked to thwart the Gaels offensive attack, but in the 36
th minute
Angus MacPhail (Vancouver, B.C.) scored the second try for the Gaels after breaking through McMaster's back line, McQueen kicked the conversion. In the 40
th minute of play McMaster earned a scoring opportunity through a penalty goal, it was kicked by Andrew Ferguson (Mississauga, Ont.), bringing the score to 14-3 at the half.
Queen's started the second half strong with a try from Dave Worsley (Vancouver, B.C.) just minutes into the second half, McQueen kicked the conversion making him three for three for conversions. Minutes after Worsley's try,
James Dent (Toronto, Ont.) broke through the Marauders defense scoring another try for the Gaels. Dent's try was followed by
Kainoa Lloyd's(Mississauga, Ont.) first try of the game, McQueen once again kicked the conversion. Lloyd closed the game for the Gaels with his second try of the match in the 70
th minute, bringing the Gaels to a 38-3 win over McMaster and advancing them to the OUA championships.
The Queen's Gaels will look to extend their undefeated season and defend their title next Saturday at Nixon Field against the Western Mustangs. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
