KINGSTON, Ont. - The Queen's Gaels women's volleyball team emerged victorious in a tough, four-set battle as they defeated the Waterloo Warriors 3-1 (25-22, 24-26, 25-15, 25-19) in OUA league play, Saturday.
Initially, Queen's and Waterloo were a tight match with two sets of rallying and fighting for the lead. Queen's managed to snag the first set, Waterloo the second. By the third set, with the fate of the game in their own hands, Queen's dominated after the score was tied at 8-8. With Colleen Ogilvie (Calgary) and Katie Hagarty (Aurora, Ont.), the Gaels won the third set 25-15.
The fourth set was aggressive, and with it being tied at 18-18, the set was to be had by either team. Queen's took this opportunity to amplify their offence and scored seven of the last eight points of the match, ending matters with a 25-19 win in the final set.
Ogilvie led all attackers with 22 kills against Waterloo's strong defensive line, and Hagarty won 11 points for the Gaels. Setter Anna Pedjase contributed 41 assists. For Waterloo, Clara Tse and Shannon Lodoen each had 11 kills, while Alice Lee had 19 digs.
This win moves the Gaels into fourth place of the OUA with a 5-2 record while Waterloo drops to tenth, at 2-4.
The Gaels play again at home against sixth place Windsor on Saturday, November 17 at noon in the ARC Main Gym.
