TORONTO, Ont. (January 30, 2009) – The Gaels women's volleyball team were swept by the University of Toronto Varsity Blues in three sets as they battled for first place of the OUA East Division; final set scores were 17-25, 23-25, and 11-25.
Colleen Ogilvie of Calgary, Alta., led the Gaels registering 12 points in the match. Ogilvie had nine kills on 13 attempts, as well as five digs.
Natalie Gray of Oshawa, Ont., contributed five points in the loss with five kills on 30 attempts as well as adding six digs. Gaels' setter
Julie Lockwood of Calgary, Alta., led the team in digs with nine as well as having nine assists while splitting setting duties with Collins.
The first set opened with what appeared to be a close match-up with the score tied up at 9, but strong hitting from the Blues saw them take the lead, taking the match by eight points 25-18.
The Gaels had a rough start to the second set as the blues took an early four point lead, but the Gaels clawed back with a five-point run led by strong hitting from Ogilvie and Gray. The Gaels were able to tie the game three times in the set, but the Blues were able to edge a 25-23 win.
In the final set the Blues clearly dominated despite the best efforts of the Gaels' hitters. A late push by the Blues widened the point spread to win the set 25-11.
Heather Bansley of Waterdown, Ont., lead the Blues with 18 points recording 16 kills, 11 digs, and two service aces.
The Gaels now hold a 10-6 record as they trail the Blues in the OUA Eastern Division by one win with a record of 11-4.
The Gaels next game is against the Western Mustangs in the Athletics & Recreation Centre in Kingston on February 5.
