KINGSTON, Ont. (November 14, 2009) -
Kelsey Thomson of Martintown, Ont., scored the game-winning goal in overtime to propel the No. 7 Queen's Gaels to a 6-5 come-from-behind victory over the Toronto Varsity Blues.
After the Gaels fell behind 5-1 midway through the second period, Thomson led the charge all the way back. She set up the Gaels third goal of the game before scoring their fourth less than a minute into the third period. She capped off a spectacular comeback by the Gaels with an unassisted goal with just 32 seconds left in the overtime period.
Despite the deficit, Queen's got off to a strong start when
Becky Conroy of Pembroke, Ont., scored her league-leading eight goal of the season on the powerplay midway through the opening period. The Varsity Blues would tie the game shortly thereafter to even the score after one period.
Toronto came out firing in the second period, peppering Gaels goalie
Karissa Savage of Calgary, Alta., from every angle. The barrage of shots allowed the Varsity Blues to score four times in the opening 11 minutes and 33 seconds, eventually chasing Savage from the net.
With rookie
Mel Dodd-Moher of Stittsville, Ont., now between the pipes, the Gaels turned their game around quickly as goals from Conroy and
Kristin Smith of Toronto, Ont., pulled Queen's to within two goals after the second.
The third period was all Queen's as they outshot Toronto 12-9 and forced the game into overtime where Thomson's heroics earned the Gaels their seventh win of the season.
Queen's improves their record to 7-2-1 while Toronto falls to 3-3-1.
The Gaels will head on the road to southwestern Ontario next weekend to take on the Windsor Lancers and the Western Mustangs.
