MONTREAL (November 1, 2009) – Rower
Sarah Marshall of Kingston, Ont. captured gold in the women's lightweight single en route to helping Queen's to an overall second place finish at the Canadian University Rowing Championship on Sunday in Montreal.
Western claimed the overall women's title by 10 points over Queen's University while the University of Victoria Vikes were declared the men's champion. Queen's finished seventh overall in the men's competition.
Overall, Queen's garnered four podium finishes in the women's competition including Marshall's gold in the lightweight single. The lightweight women's coxed four crew captured second place while the lightweight women's double crew and the women's eight secured third in their respective events.
"I'm really proud of the women's team and their results,” said lightweight women's coach Nicole Bobette. “It was reflective of all the hard work they put in this season."
On the men's side
Greg McNally of Carlisle, Ont. had the best finish earning a third place finish in the men's single discipline. The lightweight men's four made up of
Ryan Meyers (Kingston, Ont.),
Rob Ballard (Vancouver),
Alex Condello (McLean Va.), Collin Sutherland (Victoria, B.C.) and
Amy de Merlis (Toronto) – cox - narrowly missed the podium, placing fourth.
