An Open Letter of Gratitude to Queen's Men's Hockey from Brett Gibson

It's time, for the past two decades I have had the privilege to lead the Men's Hockey team at Queen's University and what an amazing experience it has been. I was given an opportunity to be a Head Coach at a very early age and more importantly the trust to make mistakes. I look forward to working with Queen's Athletics as we move forward to a new era of Men's hockey here at Queen's.

The grind of coaching is real. The wins last minutes, the losses last days. I need to take the time to put my family and my health at the forefront.

At the university level, you truly make relationships that will last a lifetime and that is the reason you see coaches stay so long. My players mean the world to me and those relationships will be the thing I miss the most. I know I was demanding and hard to please as a coach. I always said I will coach the player, not the person, because deep down I loved the person and only wanted the best for them. Guys, thank for allowing me to be a small part of the player and, more importantly, the men you have become. Same year-end graduating speech applies; we are now friends.

I never went to Queen's; always said I was never smart enough. But I was smart enough to get out and connect with the amazing alumni of the hockey program from the day I took the job. Guys, thank you for your support and trust. The connectivity of past and present players is special and the bonds are real.

I have only had three Athletic Directors over my tenure and without their support I would not have lasted this long. John, Leslie and Linda, Thank You for the trust and allowing my vision to evolve into what I believe is one of the top hockey programs in the country.

To my staff over the last 20+ years, you have been simply the best. Dave Descent, Booster Club President, you are my mentor. Fish, our friendship is unbreakable. Kirk, Hauss, Cimmer, Jonesy, Benny, Spence, Kevin, Patty, Clint, Miles, Nic, Fraser and many more, Thank You.

I have always told my players when they graduate make sure you leave the program in a better place than when you got here. I know deep down as I step away from the Head Coach of Queen's Men's Hockey, I have done that.

Ang, Bailey and Cole I know I have missed a lot of events while coaching. Your support and love mean more than you will ever know. I am not retiring from coaching; I still have a lot more in me. It's just time for a reset and a new voice to lead the program. It was never about the wins and losses; it was always about making the program better and together we did that.
