Queen's Women's Basketball's Amy Hagman named OUA Women's Basketball's Joy Bellinger Award recipient

Queen's Women's Basketball's Amy Hagman was named the OUA Women's Basketball Joy Bellinger Award recipient by the conference on Thursday.

The Joy Bellinger Award recognizes outstanding service to the sport, advancement of university athletics, and off-the-court contributions. In her fourth year with the Gaels, Hagman's tremendous contributions include serving as Intramurals Student Lead, organizing and coaching the Queen's ArtSci Cup in support of Martha's Table, co-presiding over the VLC while leading numerous community initiatives, contributing to Culture Day planning, and taking on leadership roles as Student-Athlete Academic Mentor Lead and Bigger Than Basketball representative.

"Amy is a selfless teammate and friend whose service to our program and Queen's University and Kingston communities is foundational and will be felt for years to come," said Queen's Women's Basketball Head Coach Claire Meadows.

Since arriving to Queen's in 2022, Hagman (Kinesiology) has been an integral part of the campus community. Hagman progressed from League Official to League Convenor in Queen's Athletics & Recreation Intramurals, and is now the Intramurals Student Lead, overseeing daily operations across multiple sports.

Hagman also organized, coached, and played in the annual Queen's ArtSci Cup, a cross-faculty game supporting Martha's Table and its important work in the Kingston community.

Hagman's leadership is also seen with Queen's Varsity Leadership Council (VLC). After joining in 2023 as the Women's Basketball Representative, Amy was elected VP of Social Media in 2024, leading creative communications and graphic design. In 2025, she was elected Co-President, where she has spearheaded initiatives supporting student-athlete mental health, equity and inclusion education, and community outreach. These efforts have included Pathways to Education Day for local youth, charity tournaments supporting Jack.org, food and clothing drives for community organizations, Gaels Care school visits, and educational theme games that use sport to promote important social conversations.

Hagman has also contributed to department-wide initiatives such as Culture Day, serving on the student-athlete planning committee.

An Academic All-Canadian, Hagman has served as a Faculty Orientation Leader, newsletter, editor, and Commissioner of Finance for the Physical Health Education & Kinesiology Student Association.

Hagman is also committed to supporting others academically, serving as a Student-Athlete Academic Mentor and now serves as the Academic Mentor Lead, helping first-year student-athletes successfully transition to university.

Beyond Queen's, Amy continues to make an impact as a Bigger Than Basketball Athlete Representative and as a student coach and mentor with the St. Lawrence Lightning JUEL Prep team.
