Queen's Women's Rugby alumna Sophie de Goede named World Rugby Women's 15s Player of the Year

Queen's Women's Rugby alumna Sophie de Goede earned the top individual honour at the World Rugby Awards this weekend, being named the World Rugby Women's 15s Player of the Year.

de Goede helped Team Canada advance to the final at the Women's Rugby World Cup this past weekend, where they were beaten by England but earned the silver medal.

"It's a real honour to receive the award," De Goede said, according to a World Rugby press release. "I don't really have the words right now because I'm thinking about the loss."

"I'm proud of myself for sure, and it's just been a real privilege to get back to playing with this team [after injury]."

During de Goede's time at Queen's, the two-sport star was named Queen's Varsity Female Athlete of the Year, as well as the OUA and U SPORTS Athlete of the Year in 2021-22, her final season at Queen's.

That year she helped the Gaels capture the U SPORTS Women's Rugby Championship, their first national championship in program history.

Also an OUA All-Star in basketball, de Goede helped the Gaels earn a bronze medal at the U SPORTS Women's Final 8 Basketball Championship in their final year at Queen's.
