The Gaels took down the Mustangs 80-3 on Saturday evening on Nixon Field. This game was the team's seniors' night, where they recognized their 14 graduating athletes. The team did not disappoint, putting up 12 tries, while Lizzie Gibson (Arts & Science) made 10 out of 12 conversions.
Queen's came to play Saturday evening, showing great composure and determination in the first half. Maddy May (Kinesiology) put the Gaels on the scoreboard with their first try five minutes into the game, while Gibson made the conversion to bring the lead to 7-0. Ten minutes later, the Gaels' followed up with a second try from Mika Matsukubo (Health Sciences), who received a pass out wide and flew down the sideline to edge out the Mustangs and land in their scoring area. Queen's had their offensive momentum rolling, giving Western few opportunities to get on the scoreboard. Despite that, the Mustangs managed to score three-points off a penalty kick, bringing the score to 12-3. The Gaels responded with two tries from Kennedi Stevenson (Arts & Science), and Gibson making 1 of 2 conversions to distance their lead to 24-3. In the 34th minute, Madison Donnelly (Arts & Science) and Matsukubo had a great passing sequence down the field, bringing Donnelly the team's fifth try and Gibson's third conversion. Queen's closed out the first half with a last minute try from Stevenson, who ran 56 yards down the field to bring the lead to 38-3 after Gibson's fourth conversion.
The Gaels continued with the same intensity in the second half, displaying the depth of their experience and grit from each player. In the last 40 minutes, Western did not manage to put up a single point, while Queen's powered through with six more tries, with Gibson making the conversion for 6 out of 6. Tries for Queen's in the second half came from Madison (MJ) Jumeau (School of Graduate Studies) with one, Gibson with three, Donnelly with one, and Stevenson with one. Second year Stevenson showed experience beyond her years, scoring four tries in the game, while veteran Gibson scored three and continued to prove reliable on conversions.
Queen's continues on with a strong season, remaining undefeated with a record of 5-0-0. The Gaels will look forward to facing off against the McMaster Marauders on October 4th on the road for their final regular season game.
