Newell, Hubert and Miller-Melancon selected in 2025 CFL Draft

The 2025 edition of the Canadian Football League (CFL) Draft took place Tuesday night with three Queen's Football players being selected.

Darien Newell (Philosophy) led the way for Queen's, being picked up with the tenth overall pick by the Edmonton Elks.

The 6-foot-3 defensive lineman entered the draft ranked No. 8 on the CFL Scouting Bureau's final Top 20 prospects list, rising from No. 13 in the winter edition. Across 37 games in the tricolour, the stat line reads 92 total tackles, 27.5 tackles for loss, 18 sacks, and one forced fumble. Newell's consistency and dominance earned multiple accolades, including two U SPORTS First Team All-Canadian selections, a second-team nod in 2022 and a three time OUA First Team All-Star recognition.

 

Silas Hubert (Environmental Studies) joins fellow Defensive Lineman Newell in Edmonton, being called with the 31st overall pick by the Elks.

The Norwood, Ont. native concluded a standout career at Queen's tallying 85 total tackles (47 solo, 38 assisted), 15 sacks, and a touchdown in 33 appearances.
 

Ashton Miller-Melancon (Arts & Science) rounded things out for Queen's, getting called by the Calgary Stampeders with the 65th overall pick in the draft.

Suiting up for 40 games in the tricolour, the veteran defensive back recorded 150 total tackles (108 solo, 42 assisted) and 16 interceptions. Miller-Melancon's impressive statline earned the Montreal, Que. native great honours and multiple accolades including a former U SPORTS First Team All-Canadian, three-time OUA All-Star, OUA All-Rookie and a U SPORTS Top 8 Academic All-Canadian for the 2022-23 season.
