KINGSTON Ont. April 2, 2025 — Queen's Football fans won't have to wait until August to see the Gaels back in action. The team is set to host its annual Gold Game on Saturday, April 5, with kickoff at 1 p.m. at Richardson Stadium.
This free event gives fans an early glimpse at the 2025 squad as they take the field for an inter-squad showdown.
Adding to the excitement, this year's game will pay tribute to two Queen's Football Hall of Famers—Larry Mohr and Mike Boone. Each inter-squad team will take on the name and colours of these Gaels legends, with Mohr's team wearing gold and Boone's team in blue.
Boone, a dominant inside linebacker from 1988 to 1992, was a defensive force for the Gaels. A three-time Queen's Defensive Player of the Year, Boone earned multiple All-Canadian honours and captained the team from 1990 to 1992.
The Mississauga, Ont., native's standout career peaked in a 1992 Vanier Cup championship, where Boone recorded an interception in Queen's 31-0 victory over Saint Mary's.
Mohr, one of the most dominant fullbacks in Canadian university football history, played for the Gaels from 1980 to 1983 and again in 1985. Mohr made an immediate impact as a rookie, setting an OQIFC (now known as the OUA) rushing record and engraving his name on the Rookie of the Year trophy.
A two-time All-Canadian, Mohr set league rushing records in four straight seasons and was named the nation's top player in 1985, winning the Hec Crighton Trophy.
"Incorporating alumni and history into the game with the offense being Team Larry Mohr and the defense representing Team Mike Boone is going to be fun," said Queen's Football Head Coach
Steve Snyder. "It's a great way to honour two legends while giving our current players a chance to compete and simulate that game day energy."
The Gold Game offers more than just a preview of the upcoming season—it's a celebration of Queen's Football history. Fans can look forward to a post-game interactive experience on the field, a chance to meet the players, and an appearance from the Queen's Band during the game.
"The Gold Game is a great community event and an opportunity to provide some football entertainment to our local fans and supporters in the spring," Snyder added. "This time of year, there's always anticipation around the CFL Draft, but having some in-person football to watch is great for those who love the game and love Queen's."
The Gold Game will also be featured on CFRC at the Lang, a new social media series that gives fans an inside look at Queen's Football.
Hosted by Jesse Bell, the show airs Fridays at noon on
CFRCPowerPlays Instagram, featuring exclusive interviews with players, coaches, and community members.
