AJ Cummings have been named the Queen's University Student-Athletes of the Week presented by Egg Farmers of Ontario, for their performances over this past weekend.
Purboo (Economics) the Gaels netminder was unbeatable between the pipes, turning aside all 26 shots faced to backstop Queen's to a commanding 4-0 victory over the Toronto Varsity Blues in the OUA Bronze Medal Game, securing both a podium finish and a berth in the U SPORTS University Cup.
The OUA Goaltender of the Year's rock-solid performance marked their second shutout of the season, punching the Gaels ticket to the nationals in Ottawa, Ont.
With momentum on their side, Queen's now sets its sights on the U SPORTS Quarterfinals, where they will face off against the Saskatchewan Huskies on Friday, March 21, at TD Place with a puck-drop slated for 7 pm.
Cummings (Arts) a standout guard for Queen's Men's Basketball team, delivered a stellar performance in the U SPORTS Quarterfinals against the Calgary Dinos on Thursday night, earning Player of the Game honours.
Cummings led the Gaels in scoring with a season-high 24 points, shooting an efficient 69% from the field, including an impressive 6-of-8 from beyond the arc, while also securing five rebounds.
Facing a Calgary team that thrived from long range, draining 19 three-pointers, Cummings responded with his own sharpshooting on display, keeping Queen's within striking distance. Despite the effort, the Gaels fell 109-98.
In the U SPORTS Consolation Semifinal on Friday against the UBC Thunderbirds, Queen's fought hard but ultimately came up short once again, falling 107-98 to conclude the 2024-25 season. Cummings contributed six points and four rebounds in the final contest of the campaign.
