Saturday's matinee at Kingston Memorial Centre saw Queen's Women's Hockey go head-to-head with longtime rivals, the Western Mustangs.
Queen's got on the board first as captain Sophie Hudson (Chemical Engineering) buried the opening goal, with assists from Mikayla Cranney (Arts & Sciences) and Jada Wood (Arts & Sciences).Â
Queen broke the ice late in the opening frame. With under a minute to go, captain Sophie Hudson (Chemical Engineering) jumped on a feed and buried the opener, with Mikayla Cranney (Arts & Sciences) and Jada Wood (Arts & Sciences) drawing the assists on the tic-tac-toe play. Between the pipes, Emma Tennant (Mechanical Engineering) was rock-solid, kicking aside all eight Western shots she faced to keep the Mustangs off the scoresheet after 20.
Western answered early in the second, capitalizing five minutes in to knot things up at 1–1. But the Gaels punched right back on the man-advantage. Scarlett Nowakowski (Commerce) hammered a shot through traffic to restore the lead, with Melissa Parton (Arts & Sciences) and Sophie Hudson (Chemical Engineering) picking up the helpers. Seconds later, Queen's struck again as Melissa Parton (Arts & Sciences) fired one home from the point for an unassisted marker, swinging all the momentum back to the Gaels heading into the final frame.
Queen's put the finishing touches on the game in the final frame. Mikayla Cranney (Arts & Sciences) added an empty-net marker, giving her second point of the night and sealing the win for the Gaels. The final whistle confirmed a 4–1 victory, keeping Queen's perfect on home ice and closing out the weekend in style.
Queen's Women's Hockey returns to the road next Saturday, November 22, for a 4:00 p.m. tilt against the Windsor Lancers. Catch all the action live on
