Queen's Field Hockey

Queen's Field Hockey kicked off their preseason this weekend by attending the University of Toronto Invitational Tournament in Toronto, Ont.

The team had a tough schedule, facing the top four teams from the 2023 season.

The Gaels started off by facing the York Lions and Guelph Gryphons on Saturday, and despite hard fought efforts the Gaels ended up coming short in both games. On Sunday, the Gaels came up against the Waterloo Warriors in the morning and the host, Toronto Varsity Blues in the afternoon. The Waterloo game started strong with a 0-0 score at half time. In the second half, second-year Sophie Kern was able to slip the ball past the goalie to get the Gaels first goal of the weekend. The game ended 3-1 for the Warriors.

For the last game of the weekend, the Gaels gave it their all and fought hard against the tough opponent of the Varsity Blues. The game ended in a 0-0 tie, with a shutout from first-year goalie, Gabby Merz.

The Gaels had lots of friends and family in the stands that helped keep the team's energy up on the field. Captains Lauren Breakell, Ellie Duggan, and Monica Johnston displayed great confidence and leadership throughout the entire weekend. Queen's is ready to get back to it and looking forward to their season opener next Saturday against the Western Mustangs. The Gaels home opener will take place on Sunday, September 22 against McMaster on Tindall Field.
