Varsity Clubs Weekend Recap: Queen's Golf wins Women's and Men's titles at Brock Invitaional

Queen's Golf and Sailing had successful weekends at their events while Queen's Women's Lacrosse continued their strong season in the Varsity Clubs Weekend Recap.

Queen's Golf

Queen's Golf swept the Brock Invitational this past weekend, winning the men's and women's team title and the men's and women's individual title.

Kendrick Webster won the men's with a 4 under 67, which led the men's team of Daniel Abraha, Ryan Crowley, Luke Macpherson and Cameron Greatrex to a team score of 291 (6 over par) to win by 5 over Waterloo.

On the women's side, Hannah Lee shot an impressive 2 over 73 to win in only her second event with Queen's, and Gella McDaniel had her best finish ever, shooting 75 to finish in a tie for second.  The women's team was rounded out by Marlow Slatter and Kate Fairey, their score of 238 placed them in first, 3 strokes ahead of Guelph.

Queen's Women's Ultimate

Day 1 of the Queens Women's Ultimate Teams first tournament, marked 14 days after the team was selected, and only 5 practices into the season. The team had absorbed new systems, plays, defensive sets, and ultimate knowledge's in only two weeks, and was ready to show the university series that we were here to play this year. Day 1 of the Canadian Ontario University Ultimate Qualifier (CUOOQ) was going to be a test and a benchmark for the season. With a later start, the team was able to settle their nerves and come out strong, with a decisive win against Wilfred Laurier University, 14-02. Game 2 was the real test, pitted against last years National Champions and the number 1 seed in the tournament, Ottawa University. From point 1, the team showed that they weren't scared of anyone, not even the reigning champions, and come out strong, breaking Ottawa to take a 2 point lead in the first half. Ottawa came out strong after halftime, taking back their break and putting the game back on serve, As time dwindled, both offensive lines were calm, but Queens was decisive and unwavering. With only 1 minute to go, Ottawa held an offensive point to bring the game to 10-10, and just like that we were on "Universe Point" or sudden death with the reigning champions. Without any doubt, the Queens O-line walked up the field, and score a clean point to end the game, and set the tone for the season!

Day 2 was a day of triumph, starting with two clean wins against Carleton University in the Quarter FInals, 14-08, and University of Western ontario 12-06. From a team not making the top bracket at nationals in 2024, this was a different team, and they were out for victories. The Finals was against long time rivals - the University of Toronto, who had put together a deep team, with some very high level players, but nothing that the Queens Gaels were afraid of. Coming out strong in the first half, Queens took 3 breaks to Toronto's 1, putting us up 2 going into the second half, but as the game matured, Toronto utilized their experience to put the pressure on Queens, and ended the game with 3 Breaks to win the game 11-09. Despite the loss, the Gaels had their heads high, knowing that they had accomplished tremendous things this weekend, and that the season was just beginning. The next tournament starts in only 5 days, and we want more!

Queen's Sailing

Queen's Sailing sent a Women's team to the CICSA Women's Regatta in Montreal, Que., this past weekend and won the event, capturing the gold medal.

Queen's Women's Lacrosse

Queen's Women's Lacrosse won both games on the weekend, defeating the McMaster Marauders 12-5 and the Brock Badgers 14-2.
