Queen's Field Hockey

This weekend Queen's kicked off their pre-season by attending the York invitational tournament in Toronto. Queen's started off by facing the McMaster Marauders and York Lions on Saturday. After a 1-0 deficit verses McMaster, second year Lauren Harhay was able to tie up the game in the second half, ending the game 1-1. The Gaels came out strong against the Lions, but unfortunately suffered a tough loss. On day two the Gaels showed up to the field with confidence and composure. They won their first game 1-0 against the Guelph Gryphons, with a slick goal by second year Kate Martin. Gabby Merz recorded the shutout. In the fourth and final game against the Laurier Golden Hawks the Gaels dominated the field, keeping possession most of the game. The goal scorers worked hard, creating an 8-0 win for Queen's: Sophie Kern (1), Monica Johnston (1), Lauren Harhay (1), Maryn Unger (2), and Kate Martin (3) with a shoot out for goalie Sarah Downes..

The Gaels had lots of friends and family in the stands that helped keep the team's energy up on the field. Captains Ellie Duggan and Abby Kaye displayed great leadership on and off the field. Queen's is ready to get back to it and looking forward to their season opener next Saturday against the Waterloo Warriors. The Gaels will stay on the road, playing the McMaster Marauders in Hamilton on Sunday.
