Queens' Women's Soccer Stays Clean at Home, Take Down Carleton 1-0

The last time that Queen's Women's Soccer faced off against the Carlton Ravens this season the result was a 1-1 draw.

This Sunday afternoon — on their home turf — the Gaels took down the Ravens 1-0.

"It was kind of a similar game. They do a good job of frustrating us and we did a good job of frustrating them by kind of playing into where they wanted to trap us and shut things down," Head Coach Dave McDowell remarked.

The match was a hard-fought battle; both the heat and Carleton's offense beat down on the Gaels.

In the 58th minute Marissa Gravel (Life Sciences) found the lone goal of the game, assisted by Seema Sakran (Kinesiology).

Carlton put the pressure on early, forcing Queen's to up their defensive effort.

"I think we struggled when we turned that ball over or made some mistakes in terms of ball winning, it's a hard thing to do even at the highest levels," McDowell commented.

Several Gaels also had close calls in the first, with shots from Lily Goss (Kinesiology) and Mattson Strickler (Con Ed) narrowly missing the back of the Carleton net.

In the start of the second, Queen's turned up the heat. The Gaels defense hit their stride, and their offense found 13 shots on net, resulting in one goal.

"We started to look at some different option in terms of freeing player up and moving off the ball. So quite pleased with the second half," McDowell said.

With the win, the Gaels record on the season improves to 4-1-1. They also move up to take second in the OUA East standings, sitting just behind the Ottawa Gee-Gees.

Queen's is back in action on Thursday, Sept. 19, at 4:00pm, taking on the RMC Paladins in a battle of the causeway. The game is available to stream on oua.tv.
