Cole Syllas, Luka Syllas, Michael Kelvin selected in CEBL Draft

KINGSTON, Ont. (April 11, 2024) – Three players from Queen's Men's Basketball were selected in the 2024 Canadian Elite Basketball League Draft, the CEBL announced Thursday.

Luka Syllas was selected by the Niagara River Lions in the second round, 11th overall, Cole Syllas was selected by the Brampton Honey Badgers in the second round, 19th overall, and Michael Kelvin II was selected by the Ottawa BlackJacks in the third round, 27th overall.

The CEBL Draft expanded to three rounds this year, with each club making three selections total (one in each round) of either returning or graduating Canadian post-secondary players from U SPORTS and the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA).

Luka Syllas (Concurrent Education) was named the U SPORTS and OUA Defensive Player of the Year while helping the Gaels win their first OUA Championship as well as a U SPORTS Men's Final 8 silver medal.

Offensively, Luka led the Gaels in scoring, averaging 16.6 points per game, which ranked 14th in the OUA. Also named an OUA First Team All-Star and U SPORTS First Team All-Canadian, Luka was also fifth in the conference in assists, with 99 on the season. Luka's 377 points this season ranked eighth on Queen's all-time single season scoring list. Luka's 109 assists rank third on the program's all-time single season list.

Luka led Queen's in steals with 47 on the season, which ranked fifth in U SPORTS, while also chipping in four defensive rebounds per game.

Cole Syllas (Engineering) finished his illustrious career at Queen's by helping the Gaels win their first OUA Championship since the 1956-67 season with a highlight reel buzzer beater in the Wilson Cup. Cole also helped the Gaels earn their highest finish at the national level in program history this past season, grabbing a U SPORTS Men's Final 8 silver medal.

Cole was named an OUA Second Team All-Star after finishing the regular season averaging 14.6 points per game and 7.6 rebounds per game. A former OUA First Team All-Star and the first U SPORTS First Team All-Canadian in program history, Cole ended his Queen's career fourth on the Gaels' all-time scoring list with 1,164 points, and third on the Gaels' all-time rebounding list with 632.

Cole played for the CEBL's BlackJacks last season, averaging 2.1 points and 1.5 rebounds in 10 games.

Kelvin (Arts) has spent the past three seasons with Queen's Men's Basketball. After appearing in seven games with the Gaels during the 2021-22 regular season, Kelvin appeared regularly with the team the past two years, helping Queen's win the OUA Wilson Cup, the team's first conference championship since the 1956-57 season, and earn a U SPORTS silver medal, their highest finish at the national level in program history.

In 20 regular season games this past season, Kelvin averaged 10.3 points per game with a 39.6 three-point percentage, and 5.5 rebounds per game.
