Gaels shoot for the cure to close an undefeated weekend

Kingston, Ont. (Feb. 3, 2024) Queen's Women's Basketball defeat Waterloo Warriors with a final score of 67-42 Saturday night at the Athletics and Recreation Center (ARC), for USPORTS' 17th annual Shoot For the Cure campaign.

In a physical contest on their home court, the Gaels capitalized on turnovers, scoring 17 points off turnovers compared to Waterloo's 15. Queens also had a stronger bench presence, contributing 14 bench points compared to Waterloo's 6.

Post-game, the Gaels would express how special it was to win a game for a good cause. "Everyone's been affected by breast cancer in some way," Julia Chadwick shared. "I think this is a great opportunity to raise money and awareness."

Julia Chadwick (Ottawa, Ont.) finished the game with 18 points, 10 rebounds and 4 blocks. Laura Donovan (London, Ont.) and Emma Weltz (Timmins, Ont.) also scored in the double digits, with 15 and 14 points, respectively.

When asked about game strategy, Weltz said, "We played with pace and we played with intensity. I think we work towards something bigger in every game!" Chadwick then added, "They came out aggressive and I think that's a good challenge for us. We were looking to battle it out and we had a lot of fun."

With the win, the Gaels' record improved to 17-2, extending their winning streak to 8. The Gaels are on the road for their next game Feb. 9th at 6:00 P.M to face off against the Lakehead Thunderwolves in Thunderbay.
