Gaels fall to Victoria in semifinals, to take on Ottawa for bronze medal at U SPORTS Women's Rugby Championship

Queen's Women's Rugby came up just short in the U SPORTS Women's Rugby Championship semifinals, falling 17-14 to the Victoria Vikes Friday afternoon in Prince Edward Island.

With the loss, the Gaels will play for the bronze medal at the national championship, taking on the No. 6 seed Ottawa Gee-Gees.

After the Vikes opened the scoring in the 12th minute, Queen's tied it up when Siobhan Sheerin continued a great season with a try in the 24th minute and Lizzie Gibson's convert gave the Gaels a 7-5 lead.

Victoria would respond seven minutes later with a converted try to lead 12-7 at half time.

The Vikes would grow their lead to 17-7 early in the second half with a try before Queen's fought back, Sheerin scoring a second try in the game in the 61st minute, with Gibson converting, to cut Victoria's lead to just 17-14.

The Gaels kept pushing and made it close late in the game, but Victoria would hold on for the win.

Gibson was named the Player of the Game for Queen's, who will close out the tournament on Sunday in the bronze medal game.
