Queen's Cross Country had a tremendous day at the OUA Cross Country Championship in North Bay, Ont. Saturday, with the Men's team finishing first overall and the Women's team finishing second overall. It was the first OUA Championship for Queen's on the Men's side in 35 years, with their last previous conference championship coming in 1989.
It was also a championship result for the Gaels'
Jude Wheeler-Dee, who crossed the line first overall to take the individual gold.
Queen's finished with a final score 29, 22 points ahead of the second place Guelph Gryphons, who earned the silver medal with 51 points.
Wheeler-Dee (Chemistry) crossed the finish line with a final time of 24:32.9 in the 8km event, nearly five second ahead of second place finisher, Max Davies of Guelph.
Roman Mironov (Commerce) was the Gaels' second place finisher on the Men's side, finishing fourth overall with a time of 24:40.6 while
Will Cox (Graduate Studies) rounded out the Top 5 with a final time of 24:49.9.
Tanner Hueglin (Arts & Science) was eighth overall with a time of 25:05.2 and
Angus Skinner (Faculty of Education) finished 11
th overall with a time of 25:13.7.
Wheeler-Dee was named the OUA Runner of the Year on the Men's side while Queen's Cross Country Head Coach
Mark Bomba was voted the OUA Cross Country Coach of the Year on the Men's side.
Wheeler-Dee, Mironov, and Cox were named First Team OUA All-Stars for their performances, while Hueglin and Skinner were named Second Team OUA All-Stars.
On the Women's side, the Gaels earned the silver medal with a final score of 65, 42 points behind the first place Western Mustangs, who finished with a final score of 23 points, and 26 points ahead of the third place McMaster Marauders, who finished with a final score of 91 points.
Alyshia Alkerton (Arts & Science) led the Gaels, finishing fourth overall with a final time of 28:52.3, less than a second off the podium.
Ella Lane (Arts & Science) was Queen's second place finisher, crossing the line 11
th overall with a time of 29:25.6 while
Elizabeth Vroom (Engineering) was right behind, finishing 12
th overall for the Gaels with a time of 29:31.6.
With the results, Alkerton was named a First Team OUA All-Star while Lane and Vroom were named Second Team OUA All-Stars. Alkerton, Lane, and Vroom are the first OUA All-Stars on the Women's side for the Gaels since 2019.
Queen's Cross Country will close out their fall season at the U SPORTS Cross Country Championships on Saturday, Nov. 9 in Kelowna, B.C.
