(U SPORTS) - Canada made a strong impression in its return to the FISU World University Cross Country Championships, highlighted by a women's team bronze medal and a pair of near-podium finishes in the mixed relays during competition held March 14–15 at the Campus Folcara Cross Country Village.
The Canadian women captured third place in the team standings, while the men finished fourth overall. Canada also placed third in the overall Country Challenge classification, trailing only Spain and Italy in the combined results across all events.
Team Canada head coach Christopher Belof of UNB said the performances reflected the strength of the U SPORTS cross-country system.
"It was a great weekend with strong results. Canada's return to FISU cross country made a strong statement about how strong U SPORTS cross country truly is. Across both men's & women's teams we had impressive results and competitive performances. Our women's group finishing 3rd in the team cup was a credit to both our short course and long course athletes and their preparation for this championship.
Equally impressive was the strength of both our mixed relay groups," he added. "Both long and short finishing just off the podium and performed well above their rankings coming into the championship."
Relay races highlight Sunday action
Canada narrowly missed the podium in both mixed relay events on Sunday, finishing fourth in the short relay and fourth again in the long relay.
In the mixed relay short race, Canada's top squad, made up of Jared Howse (UNB / Red Deer, Alta.), Marisha Thompson (Victoria / Norwood, Ont.), Nolan Turgeon (Sherbrooke / Victoriaville, Que.), and Olivia Cooper (Alberta / Edmonton, Alta.), crossed the line in 19:14, finishing behind Belgium, Italy and Germany. The Canadian quartet remained in contention throughout the fast-paced race, staying within striking distance of the medal positions before ultimately settling just nine seconds off the podium.
Canada also fielded a second entry in the event, consisting of Félix Quirion (Sherbrooke/ Sherbrooke, Que.), Sophie Coutts (Western / Toronto, Ont.), Jack Lehto (Guelph / Burlington, Ont., and Julia Agostinelli (Toronto / London, Ont.), which finished ninth overall.
Later in the day, Canada again finished fourth in the mixed relay long race, as the team of team of Jaxon Kuchar (Victoria / Trail, B.C.), Alexandra McDougall (Guelph / Port Perry, Ont.), Angus Skinner (Queen's / Kingston, Ont.), and Maria Linton (Western / Cobourg, Ont.), posted a time of 53:21. The two relay results capped a consistent team performance across the weekend, with Canadian runners showing depth across both distances and both genders.
