Queen's Men's Ultimate and Women's Fastpitch were in action at national and provincial championships this past weekend.
Queen's Men's Ultimate
Queen's Men's Ultimate team headed to the CUUC National Championship this past weekend and came home with a fistful of hardware, winning bronze over Victoria in a repeat of last year's final.
On Saturday, the Gaels ran out to a quick win over Manitoba with an impressive defensive stand, starting the game with three consecutive breaks. Against Sherbrooke, it was a tighter matchup with some last minute heroics elevating the team to their second victory of pool play. Against Victoria, it was a similar story as the Gaels pushed it to a final point to determine the game but ultimately came up short, losing 12-11.
Sunday marked the fourth time Queen's played Toronto this season and the Gaels played spoiler, sending Toronto to the fifth place bracket as third year captain Dax Miller leapt over the pile up and came down with the disc to win the game.
Semifinals against McGill was a tight matchup early but ultimately the Gaels lost and headed to the bronze medal match.
For the final game of the season, the Gaels came out hungry with fourth year captain Tyler Gunasekera snatching a Callahan and veteran Ryan Tham striking deep for an amazing upwind break, quickly running up an early lead. All of the lines were firing and Queen's took bronze with a 12-8 win in a total team effort.
The coaches would like to recognize rookie Devan Pearson and second-year Kohl Millitz for impressive plays, rising to the moment and contribute in critical moments on the weekend.
Graduating student-athletes Augustin Benoit, Cam Kennedy, Declan Gainer, Evan Jones, Lucas Coster, Quinton Malec, Ryan Tham, Thomas Oyhenart, Tommy Woods, and Tyler Gunasekera leave the program with three national medals in the last four years.
Queen's Fastpitch
Queen's Fastpitch finished fourth overall at the OUS Championship in Napanee, Ont. this past weekend.
The Gaels won their first game of the championship tournament, 2-0 over the Windsor Lancers, before losing 10-0 to the Toronto Varsity Blues.
Queen's would next beat the Ottawa Gee-Gees before losing to the Lancers in their second meeting, 7-0, to finish the tournament fourth overall.
Highlights over the weekend included
Abby Jacklin batting .400 for the weekend,
Abi Poland scoring four runs and three hits against Windsor in Queen's first game.
Also of note,
Abby Jacklin threw 21 innings and had 41 strikeouts and only three walks.
The Gaels also had 12 hits against Ottawa.
Queen's Field Hockey
This weekend, Queen's Field Hockey faced the York Lions for their last two games of the regular season. On Saturday, the Gaels travelled to Toronto, and came out strong and aggressive, holding their own for the majority of the first half. York gained the upper hand in the last four minutes of the half and managed to put two goals in past the Gaels goalie. The game ended in a 5-0 loss.
On Sunday, Queen's faced the York Lions again, but on their home field at Tindall Field. The Gaels brought the intensity, hoping to change the result from the day before. Queen's played a hard fought game, but unfortunately ended up coming short with a 3-1 loss. The lone goal for the Gaels was scored by forward Kate Martin.
The outdoor field hockey season has now come to a close for the Gaels, but they are looking forward to a great indoor season and preparing for next year.
