KINGSTON, Ont. (June 8, 2023) – With the 2023 Canadian Football League regular season kicking off Thursday night in Calgary, Alta., six Queen's Football alumni will be on opening day rosters across the league.
Defensive tackle Derek Wiggan leads the list, entering his eighth season with the Stampeders after being selected by the team in the fourth round in the 2014 CFL Draft.
Wiggan, who played in his 100
th career game in the CFL last season, was honoured as the Calgary Stampeders 2022 President's Ring recipient by the team earlier this year.
In 110 career games, Wiggan accumulated 143 tackles and 15 sacks.
Next on the list are receiver Chris Osei-Kusi and defensive end Cam Lawson, with 22 regular season games each.
After being selected in the fourth round of the 2019 CFL Draft by the Montreal Alouettes, Osei-Kusi spend the past two seasons with the Edmonton Elks, accumulating six receptions for 79 yards and seven special teams tackles. Osei-Kusi will open the season with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.
Lawson has spent time with the Alouettes and Winnipeg Blue Bombers after being selected in the second round of the 2020 CFL Draft by Montreal. Lawson has 12 tackles and a sack in 22 regular season games.
Three Queen's Football alums joined the CFL last year.
Defensive end
Anthony Federico appeared in 10 games and recorded five special teams tackles for the Tiger-Cats after being selected in the second round of the 2022 CFL Draft.
Peter Adjey appeared in all 18 regular season games as the long snapper for the Elks after being selected in the third round of the 2022 CFL Draft.
And after being the final selection in the 2022 CFL Draft, fullback
Konner Burtenshaw appeared in 10 games for the Blue Bombers.
Theo Grant was selected in the fourth round by the Alouettes and
Evan Floren was chosen in the seventh round by the Saskatchewan Roughriders in the 2023 CFL Draft. Both players are currently on the teams' suspended list.
