Queen's Gaels announce football exhibition game against McGill Redbirds for August 20 at Richardson Stadium

The Queen's Gaels Football program announced today that its 2022 Training Camp schedule will include an exhibition game against the McGill Redbirds on August 20 at Richardson Stadium. Queen's will open its regular season one week later on August 27 against the Toronto Varsity Blues.

The Gaels returned to the gridiron in 2021 after a season away due to the COVID-19 pandemic and completed an undefeated regular season with a 6-0 record. In the postseason, Queen's defeated Carleton and Ottawa on home turf before ultimately falling to the Mustangs in the 113th Yates Cup at Richardson Stadium, the first Yates Cup to be hosted in Kingston since 2009.

McGill returns to Richardson Stadium for the first time since August 19, 2017 when the Gaels earned a 38-24 victory in exhibition play. The Gaels and Redbirds rivalry stands as one of the longest standing rivalries in Canadian football history with the first matchup between the programs taking place on October 8, 1898. In competitive play, Queen's holds a 94-71-5 edge in the all-time series. The teams have not played one another in a regular season or bowl game since 2000.

"On August 20, Queen's will host McGill in an exhibition game at Richardson Stadium," said Gaels head coach and 2021 Frank Tindall Trophy winner Steve Snyder. "We are really excited about this opportunity and appreciative of the opportunity to work closely with the great people at McGill to make this happen."

"Embracing a traditional rivalry is something we love to do here, and playing an additional football game is a major bonus for any OUA Team. We love playing this game," said Snyder. "The opportunity to provide game experience for more student-athletes on our roster really highlights our commitment to development and our plan for sustained success. We take pride in improving everyday and August 20th will certainly be a great day for improvement."

"We hope recruits, fans and alumni across the country take notice to our program's commitment to tradition, development and providing a great experience for all."
