KINGSTON, Ont. (May 19, 2022) – Annie Lloyd and Matt Halpen were named the Marion Ross Trophy and Jack Jarvis Trophy recipients as Queen's Varsity Clubs Athletes of the Year for the 2021-22 season during the 86th annual Colour Awards, which were held virtually from May 17-19.

Other major award winners included Brooke Rutledge and Dan Coolican as Alfie Pierce Trophy recipients for Varsity Clubs Rookies of the Year, and the Women's Squash Team as Award of Merit recipients for Varsity Club of the Year.

Lloyd was named the OUA's Defender of the Year as well as an OUA All-Star for her performance in 2021-22.

"Annie has been an impact player for our program from Day 1. She turned down a scholarship to Bryant University for lacrosse in order to come to Queen's," said Queen's Women's Lacrosse Head Coach Mike Watson. "We tasked her with matching up defensively against opponents' best players and she was also one of our top scorers in her first year. Halpen, who was a B finalist at the OUA Swimming Championship this past season, was also recognized as the OUA Men's Community Service Award winner. The award recognizes performance in swimming, academic excellence, and community involvement, and Halpen was named the recipient for his team leadership and involvements the Senior Portfolio Manager for the Queen's University Investment Council (QUIC).

"Matt's support over this last season in light of the shift in coaching staff was particularly appreciated," said Queen's Swimming Head Coach Erin Lee. "Matt lent a helping hand wherever possible to facilitate my transition to head coach. He encouraged the team to be patient and receptive, and also took on extra administrative responsibilities such as recruiting prospective students and initiating updates to the website and roster.

"Although it has been a tumultuous two years, Matt's dedication to the team has not wavered, and his leadership will leave a lasting impact on the team's culture."

Queen's Women's Lacrosse fielded two award winners this past season as Rutledge (Melancthon, Ont.) was named an Alfie Pierce Trophy recipient as Varsity Clubs Female Rookie of the Year. Rutledge was named an OUA First Team All-Star for her efforts this past season helping the Gaels earn the OUA silver medal.

"Brooke has an engine that doesn't quit, she is constantly battling all over the field," said Watson. "She was one of our leaders this year on loose balls and was among our leading scorers. She leads by example with her play on the field and never quits. Brooke also plays in all situations for us."

Coolican (Kingston, Ont.) was named an Alfie Pierce Trophy recipient as Varsity Clubs Male Rookie of the Year after helping Queen's Cycling win the Canadian Collegiate Cycling Association (CCCA) Virtual Championship Series.

Coolican finished in second place in the CCCA Men's Category 1 Individual Omnium Leaderboard, and also won the Ottawa Grand Prix Road Race and finished second in the Toronto Grand Prix Time Trial this past season.
